I've just been to Brisbane for three days for the Wildlife Tourism Association conference. Not much time for serious wildlife watching (ironically). I did learn there is a new guide to bat watching in Australia coming soonish. I'll post here when I have news.

It has been a while since my last update! Very little in terms of wildlife happened - well, at least new wildlife for the year list. There have been splendid mornings with seemingly endless waves of migrant finches, pigeons and thrushes rushing overhead, but there were no new species among them. About a week or so ago finally managed to see a white-tailed eagle this year. Took me long enough, given how common they have become in the Netherlands!
Besides the eagle there are also two blues from Vienna that I forgot to post after identification, and a new (and likely the last) dragonfly.

105) Shining Cuckoo Chrysococcyx lucidus
New Zealand has two native cuckoo species (Shining Cuckoo and Long-tailed Cuckoo). They are both migratory, spending the winter months in the Pacific islands and returning to NZ to breed around October. When in NZ they tend to be easy to hear but difficult to see. I have a big rata tree on my street which can be seen from my window, and every time I hear a Shining Cuckoo calling I pick up my binoculars and scan the tree in case it is in there. They are just wee birds - about the size of a sparrow - and are well-camouflaged with their green upperparts and barred underside. A little while ago I heard one calling and looked out my window just as a small bird flew from one branch to another. I grabbed my binoculars and managed to get a short view of a Shining Cuckoo before it took off again.
