Drusillas Park News from Drusillas

Visited today and definitely had a few births over the last few months of 2021. There were:

- a Linnaeus’ Sloth (mentioned above)
- two young mantled guerezas
- young Sulawesi Macaque

Overall zoo was looking pretty good, must say! New enclosure was under construction outside the water bird aviary. Presumably the incoming bushdogs? Although it did have a roof.. Parma wallabies haven’t departed yet either. Website lists Golden Lion Tamarins and Geoffroy’s Marmosets but must admit I didn’t see them anywhere.

The zoo has posted photos of a new enclosure that is getting constructed, would this happen to be the one that you saw during your visit?
According to their Instagram post, it will house a new species for the zoo.

Just had a look and 99% sure it is (that blue hoarding was covering the sides so could only see the top). It’s directly opposite the aviary with the ibis and spoonbills and the entrance to the Binturong/owl building. Interesting that it’s going to be a new species as based on some things I’d read I believed the order of things was gonna be:

- Parma Wallabies go
- Coatis move to this enclosure
- Bush dogs get the knocked through Coati/wallaby enclosure.

Surely this isn’t for the bushdogs, do they need a mesh roof? Unless they’re sharing with the coatis maybe. That could be it. But then I’m not sure what goes in the wallaby/Coati enclosures. Looking at the comments someone else though the Coati was moving there too.

Maybe it’s entirely unrelated to the incoming bush dogs and the bush dogs will simply get the wallaby enclosure and this is for another species.

Some more recent news events:

6th May - Two Cotton-Top Tamarins were born.

Athena, the park’s 6 month old Linnaeus’s Two-Toed Sloth, has passed away after deteriorating rapidly with an intestinal infection.

"HUGE ZOO NEWS
We are over the moon to announce that Drusillas Zoo will be welcoming a brand new animal species to our family in 2023!
You may have noticed we recently started some building work next to our gibbon enclosure and we're thrilled to confirm this is to become the home of our new arrivals who are due to join the gang Easter 2023.
We can't say just yet which species they are, but we can tell you a few things and maybe you can guess??

We are designing a Himalayan-inspired enclosure for them (to make them feel at home)

We will be one of only 3 collections in the UK where you can meet them
Any idea what it might be?

WE ARE SO EXCITED"

It's a great species, and I hope to see it on show soon. I can't say what it is either but I know what it is. Some of the guesses on there are so far off as well I don't think the average zoo visitor would ever guess it.

Given the ‘3 collections’ clue it does rule out a lot of guesses.

Next to the gibbons and that whole area is largely a small arboreal mammal area/owls. I believe so likely some sort of primate or other small mammal.

Stump-tailed macaque matches the ‘three zoos’ clue but isn’t overly ‘Himalayan’.

yellow-throated marten? Again, Himalayan?

Honey Badger fits that clue too!!

I'm inclined to say takin - though seeing as three collections keep takin already [Port Lympne, Paignton and Highland] unless one of them were to go out of the species that would make Drusillas the fourth - so maybe not that.
Some answers seem to suggest moon bear - as perhaps is being implied with 'over the moon' etc. Again, however, as only Wingham holds the species that'd make Drusillas the second, so perhaps not that either.
