One thing I realized I missed - the zoo apparently will not be continuing with Chimpanzees, and their mostly older troop will be phased out as they pass.

Overall this looks like a very efficient space design. They use pretty much all of the available footprint, they have a main artery with distinct loops branching off, and several of the animal crossings and holding areas are built over or under visitor paths. The inclusion of many smaller exhibit spaces in the African area along with what looks like 4 exhibit buildings between the 3 areas to be built later makes me hopeful for a large and balanced collection. Very exciting!
A question: It says "1/3 Roof Cover" over the flamingo aviary. Does anyone know what that means?

I admittedly have no clue what I'm talking about so ignore this if you want. My guess is that means that 1/3rd of the aviary would have a roof covering it, instead of it all just simply being a netted over enclosure that was otherwise entirely exposed to the elements.

This would be my guess as well - a partly covered area sheltered from the elements.
That seemed like what it meant. Is that a common thing for other zoos to do? I can't recall any examples off the top of my head.
It appears that there are no apes in phase one of the new zoo from the phase one map. It seems that any ape exhibits would be a future development. Geladas will be the primate stars of the new zoo with supporting roles by colobus and squirrel monkeys.

Ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo! This is one deliciously ambitious plan! Can't say I was expecting Geladas, but I'm not complaining! More lip-flipping grazer monkeys! Only exclusions from current Sacramento Zoo that really bums me out are the aardvarks and giant anteaters. You have two termite-slurpers to choose from, and you choose neither of them?!
I have one concern, though: I'm worried the new Sacramento Zoo will fall into the same trap as other "new" zoos like the Sydney Zoo or Odysea Aquarium. It gets hyped up as this big new thing, it delivers (or doesn't, look at Sydney), and then... nothing else happens. I like that there's phases for the different areas, but what happens when everything is done? Is there room to improve/expand? I don't think a zoo can ever be truly "finished". As husbandry standards change, zoos change.
I don't know. Maybe I'm looking too deep into this and looking too far into the future, but it's a genuine concern, right? Still excited, but I'm not counting any chickens before the egg has even been laid.

Well their anteater seems to have passed away recently as it was removed from the site a month or two ago. But yeah I was hoping to see one or both in the new map.
Per their social media - the zoo will be closed through at least tomorrow while they continue cleaning up storm damage. All animals are safe, but several trees came down or lost large branches that need to be removed before things are safe to reopen. Some fence work will also need to be done as there were photos showing trees leaning on fences.
A follow-up to this - the zoo will remain closed for the next three days for further storm cleanup and inclement weather. A tree took down part of the perimeter fence and other trees blocked roadways and others shifted becoming at risk of dropping on animal/staff buildings. As far as has been released there has been no actual damage to exhibits/infrastructure, which is good news.
Turns out Shani the Masai giraffe was still pregnant! She gave birth to a healthy female calf yesterday, January 22nd - reported on socials

I may be going to the Sacramento Zoo Wednesday and was wondering what new animals they have. I last went in January 2021. From I’ve seen cheetahs and Galapagos tortoises have been added. Anything else? Also, are there any rare species I should make sure to keep an eye out for?
A couple species in the reptile house I think but not much else new of late. I forget when the capybaras arrived so possibly them.
Far as rarities, the Giant Garter Snake is the main one.

On March 8th, the zoo announced its name, Anna-Leroy.

Looks like Aardvark is out, no longer listed on the website either. Sac has lost both Giant Anteater and Aardvark within a year's timeframe, that's a shame. Also means Small Wonders now houses none of the species it originally opened with...
I'll miss the aardvark. It was definitely a unique exhibit for a Californian zoo. From this point on I'm guessing that species not going to the new zoo will gradually depart while the new zoo takes form.
