Zoo Tycoon Board Game

I can’t imagine my childhood without the iconic PC game; and now there’s a board game version coming soon.

Crowdfunding campaign begins October 25:

In Zoo Tycoon The Board Game, 2-4 players compete to build the most recognized zoo. In this strategic and thematic board game, each player has the freedom to develop their own zoo with 34 species, food booths, zoo shops and many more attractions.

Each animal species has its own characteristics regarding popularity for visitors, educational value, and nature conservation. Same as zoos in real life, players must find the right balance between popularity and conservation over the course of the game.

Some updates:

  • The Kickstarter campaign has finished and has been a complete success, with all stretch goals completed.
  • The giraffe has been added to the game as a stretch goal reward.
  • The crowned crane has been replaced with Fischer's lovebird, due to the former's IRL rarity.

In a word - complex.

The general idea is easy enough to understand and actually building the enclosures is reasonably simple, plus very rewarding once you manage to get them absolutely perfect. The problem is that there's a LOT going on at once. I guarantee, you will NEED either your instruction booklet or info-card on hand to make sure you understand what's going on and I guarantee, you'll likely get so distracted you'll miss out crucial steps.

It definitely has some fun elements - it is very satisfying when you manage to obtain a higher level animal or achieve a goal, and I certainly don't regret funding it - but it is absolutely not a game I'd recommend for novices or first-timers. Although if you're like me and just like messing around with little animal meeples, it's a fun little distraction.

Thank you for your reply.
I haven't made my mind up yet on buying this game, it's quite expensive. I don't mind a game being complicated too much, but with the cost of it I would want to feel like playing the game again after the first time.
