Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo News 2022

Would anyone else prefer if the zoo kept these species, rather than eventually changing it to that North American-themed area?
I'm of deeply mixed feelings. If the Small Mammal House is going to stay I think they need to reinvest in it a little - it feels so empty with the nocturnal area now missing half of the species it once held. I'd like to see these species stay at the zoo but it's hard to imagine letting the current building linger as it is.

I'd certainly like to see he proposed North America expansion in another part of the zoo. Could they not be added closer to the existing North America habitats?

I agree with everything that you said. There is no doubt that the existing Small Mammal House needs to be renovated. I think it would be interesting if they gutted it and made newer exhibits for all of the current species, and made new exhibits for some new species.

I know that they had plans to renovate the existing North American area into that Alaskan expansion, but I also don't see why they couldn't add many of them into the area next to the current North America section either. I may just be uneducated in exhibit design, but I think it would be relatively easy to build enclosures for them in the wooded areas around the zoo, right?

The species kept in the Small Mammal House are some of my favorites in the zoo, and it would be a shame to see them leave in exchange for - arguably - less-interesting species. Even better yet, I wouldn't mind seeing a future where the existing Small Mammal House species and the new North American species could be added to the zoo. (I suppose it would be difficult to house and maintain all of those species, though.)

I’d personally like to see the following:

A whole new nocturnal house in place of the current Special Exhibits building, with the current species, some returning ones (pottos, sugar gliders, and kinkajou for instance), and even some newcomers (aardvarks and aye-ayes would be awesome). Milwaukee I recall reading was among, if not the, first to have a nocturnal-themed exhibit, so it would be great to keep that legacy going, especially since these kinds of buildings are becoming a rarity these days.

As for the animals in the day area of the building, I can see them getting new exhibits in different areas of the Zoo. For example, dwarf mongoose can fit into Adventure Africa; and the squirrels, sloth, small primates, etc. could be incorporated into the primate complex, which in turn can be reworked into a rainforest complex of sorts.

I wouldn't mind seeing this at all, either! Having an entire Nocturnal House at the zoo would be extremely interesting, in my opinion.

It wouldn't be hard to construct a new exhibit for the dwarf mongoose, due to their size, and I think that it wouldn't be difficult to integrate some of those other species get moved into the primate complex, either. I only saw a single Goeldi's Monkey and Cotton-Top Tamarin on exhibit in that massive mixed enclosure when I last visited, but I think the sloth may be able to be exhibited alongside them, even if more individuals of the monkeys are added. (But it would all depend on the personalities of the monkeys.)

Thank you for the updates! Looks like I need to go visit. The news regarding the Aquatic and Reptile Center is very intriguing.

How many De Brazza monkeys does the zoo have?

Just reflecting on what’s been mentioned this year that’s “happening” next year. Has anyone heard moment on any of these things, such as a redo of the front entrance area, including the penguin exhibit, or the rhino area finally getting started? I’ve been searching and not really finding anything nor have I heard anything. Have any of you?

An update to my question, I would like to thank @wilson for finding answers. It appears that things have shifted, the front entrance penguin update has been shifted to the fall 2023 (or earlier) and the rhino construction has been shifted to spring 2024.

Milwaukee Zoo welcomes pair of DeBrazza’s monkeys

Info on De Brazza pair:

The Milwaukee Zoo announced Tuesday it has welcomed a pair of DeBrazza's monkeys to the Primates of the World Building: Holly, a female, and Hugo, a male.

DeBrazza's monkeys, which is a new species to the zoo, aren't as common compared to other species.

Holly, 5, and Hugo, 4, arrived through accredited zoos as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which helps selected species survive in zoos and aquariums.

Updates for 12/27/2022 Visit
Overall, there wasn't much to touch on about the zoo. I thought it was going to be a day with no one there, as it was a random Tuesday in December, but I guess it happened to be a free day, so there were more people there than I thought!

  • There was a new, unsigned bird species in the aviary with the Luzon-Bleeding Heart
  • There is a Boat-Billed Heron chick in the free-flight aviary, according to a volunteer
  • There were posts in front of two aviaries - the one with the Victoria crowned-pigeons, and the one with the pheasant pigeons next to it.
  • The old Cuttlefish tank is still empty, but it has an "Animal Habitat Temporarily Closed" sign on it
  • The new Green Anaconda, who is a female who apparently arrived a few weeks ago, was quite active. (I know people have been saying Henry Vilas is down to one anaconda, so may she came from there?)
  • I saw the new Chuckwallas!
  • That large enclosure in the corner is still boarded up, hopefully, they are working on it.
  • There is an exhibit that says: "This exhibit is being renovated." It has an Ornate Box Turtle sign on it, so maybe this is the species that is moving in? I believe there was a pair of young Leopard Tortoises in there before?
  • I saw the new De Brazzas! Very interesting species.
  • There is still the Goeldi's Monkey/Cotton-Top Tamarin pair in the large exhibit. I am still confused about why they only have that pair in that exhibit, while the larger family groups remain in the Small Mammals Building.
