But now he isn’t, so why haven’t they stopped?
they have their own agenda. No animals in zoos, no pets and so on.
But now he isn’t, so why haven’t they stopped?
I am pretty sure the LA zoo can support a single matriarch line if they decide to go on that route.
They definitely could support a breeding herd, if only there were available reproductive cows that they could send there![]()
Point Defiance Zoo in Washington has only Suki but last I heard they specialize in difficult to manage cows. I do not know if they plan to phase out or not. That’s the closest zoo that comes to mind that can take older cows.
Suki is there last elephant once she dies they won’t bring any other elephants.
For those that don’t know, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park once again has a bull elephant. Vui Musi has returned to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park from Fresno.
I noticed speculation was occurring about what’s going to happen with Fresno on the North American African Elephant Population so I’m moving the discussion here. @Hyak_II made some really good points about the transfer but I’m hearing rumors already and I did reach out to Fresno too if they’re intending on getting a new bull elephant. I want to know from @Hyak_II and @IndianRhino who are more so experts in this sort of stuff do you find the rumors of Fresno acquiring a new bull to be credible or not?
Considering Fresno currently hold two very valuable females who can breed, i'd imagine they have some sort of plan to obtain a replacement.
Obviously Vuimusi just wasn't able to get the job done, so I think it's likely they're seeking another bull who'll provide them with a fresh start.
Apparently a new bull is coming to Fresno according to @PSO but where would that animal come from facility wise?
There are a few options off the top of my head:
Samson from Maryland seems to be the best in my eyes. He's fourteen now, and he won't have the opportunity to breed at Maryland anytime soon.
There's also Tsavo (2008) and Jabali (2011) at DAK; and Jabali is quite a genetically valuable young bull.
My question is why do you always assume that we have the answers? Most of us are just as much in the dark as you are and those that do know the answers are likely not going to respond to these questions because 1) this is a public forum and not exactly the right place for sensitive information (which elephant-related news often is) unless it's already been publicly announced and 2) the amount of speculation and unnecessary commentary in these threads often keeps a lot of these people from posting in these threads because it gets frustrating to keep up with when most of the content is not even close to the realm of possibility. Now, I realize Fresno getting a new bull is very much in the realm of possibility but there are just so many possibilities for what is to occur with Fresno's program that there is no point in going that far and speculating. Oftentimes with all this speculation going around, people began to spread misinformation, sometimes accidentally, and it's often frustrating for those who are actually knowledgeable about these things to deal with all the misinformation that comes with extreme speculation. Now, I hope you don't take anything I said personally (and I apologize if you did), this is just something me and quite a few others have felt and I felt it was necessary to get this across to not just you but everyone involved in these threads. Obviously this is a thread for speculation and I myself have done some questionable things on this thread in the past, but I think it'd be a good idea if we all think about the quality of our posts and if they're adding value to the conversation going forward, rather than simply speculating just for the sake of speculating as much as we can.Apparently a new bull is coming to Fresno according to @PSO but where would that animal come from facility wise?
I found this interesting that DAK is introducing its young females Kianga and Nadirah to Maclean for breeding but no word on Vasha or Donna. I know that it might be too late for Vasha now since it’s been 11 years since she had Jabali but Donna could still conceive with her last calf being born almost 6 years now. There’s 2 episodes this season centered around the elephants the first one about Nadirah’s first encounter with Maclean and another one about Kianga having tantrum in the pool.
And does anyone know what happened to Rafiki it appears she’s been deceased for sometime now.

I know what some members said before about adding value to this thread and I just want people to know that I really did think long and hard about this post. A lot has changed for both the African and Asian Elephant population currently in the U.S. We have six African Elephants on the way to be born in the U.S in 2023 and 1 already for 2024. As far as confirmed pregnancies here’s who we know as previously reported
1.) Lolly, an estimated 12 year old female at Omahas Henry Doorly Zoo who is a first time mother and has a calf due in 2023
2.) Jayei, estimated to be in her 30s at Omahas Henry Doorly Zoo who has one daughter Omma and she’s also due in 2023.
3.) Renee, a 43 year old female at the Toledo Zoo is due in 2024.
Does it seem like the AZA is finally using its potential with African Elephants when it comes to breeding? It just seems like there was a lot of changes in my opinion cause we had virtually no births these last couple of years and 2023 we have six calves on the way. Regarding the 4 others that are due in 2023, I guess it’s somewhat of a tossup in my opinion but aside from Lolly and Jayei at Omaha,
1.) Litsemba I think is likely due this year at the Reid Park Zoo because I know she had been breeding with Mabu prior to his transfer to Fresno.
2.) Zola and Mlilo at the Dallas Zoo
3.) Any of Sedgwick County Zoos females
4.) Batir at the North Carolina could possibly be due in 2023 but I do find that unlikely.
5.) Matjeka and Mbali at ZooTampa but I also think that’s unlikely.
Regarding births for 2024 aside from Renee at the Toledo Zoo that are likely,
1.) Omma at the Omaha Zoo
2.) Nolwazi and her daughter Amahle at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo
3.) Any of the females at Disneys Animal Kingdom
4.) Any of the females at the Sedgwick County Zoo.
5.) Zahara at the Indianapolis Zoo
With Asian Elephants I don’t see the point in speculating there at this time when it comes to births cause right now there are no confirmed pregnancies in the population in the U.S. If you guys think this post was too unproductive I’ll remove it from the thread as well.

Another elephant pregnant at Omaha zoo; baby due in August 2023
Toledo Zoo announces pregnancy of elephant Renee
You can add Nadirah from DAK she is currently pregnant with her first calf!! The father is Maclean. Revealed in the second episode of the new Season of Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The episode was kind of rushed and they didn’t give a due date but she was 16 when she got pregnant and recently turned 18 back in December. So hopefully if everything went well that calf should be due soon.
Given we now know there are a total of four confirmed African elephant pregnancies here is my take on the possibly pregnant cows at the moment
Confirmed pregnancies
Likely Pregnant but not confirmed
- Jayei (Omaha)
- Lolly (Omaha)
- Nadirah (DAK)
- Renne (Toledo)
Possibly Pregnant
- Kianga (DAK)
- Any of the Sedgwick girls
- Omma (Omaha)
- Litsemba (Reid Park)
Unlikely but possibly pregnant
- Mikki (Louisville)
- Donna (DAK)
- Zuri (Hogle)
- Makena (Montgomery)
- Zahara and Ivory (Indianapolis)
- Vasha (DAK)
- Batir (North Carolina)
- Victoria, Zuri, and Angelica (Pittsburgh)
- Sukiri (ICC)
hold on, why isn’t Zola and Mlilo at the Dallas Zoo and Amahle and Nolwazi at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo mentioned? All 4 of those girls could be pregnant and with Fresnos case Amahle and Nolwazi are most likely due to have a calf in 2024. We have 6 African Elephant females we know that are having calves in 2023 according to the Omaha Zoo in addition of the African Elephant births between 2022-2023 are or will be at Omaha.
