Honestly, that’s just what Detroit needed after expanding the aardvark exhibit.

Apparently it was just announced that the Nature Center is no longer being built. Politicians from the area are so mad they're talking about not putting the zoo millage up to vote again in 2026. Apparently they want to enhance existing programs, and provide better educational opportunities at local parks, schools, etc. The new zoo director did not give any specific reasons the project was cancelled.

Damn. I get being against the idea, but why would you be so angry about it? Also I kinda predicted this from the Huron-Clinton Metroparks announcement yesterday, like that was their sudden choice of "next best thing".
 
With this announcement every single mention of the Great Lakes Center For Nature is scrubbed off their website. Completely gone. Not even a comment about its cancelation. Instead there is a noticeably bigger presence of Belle Isle on the website, and Belle Isle Nature Center now has its own website.

I guess if there is a positive to this it means they can focus more on projects at the actual zoo like the KidZone. We'll probably get to see what Murphy's been cooking at a slightly (if not hugely) quicker pace than before with the nature center off her back.

I didn't think of that. If canceling this project means focusing more on the zoo, then I'm for it. I thought their anger was a bit much too. Why make the zoo suffer when other people benefit from it?
 
Typically, most politicians don't care about people if its not in their interest.

I'm disappointed but not surprised with the cancellation plans, since after all it's been almost 5 years and almost nothing came out of it. Let's hope they use the spare time/resources to focus on the zoo itself (including the KidZone that we're all anticipating)

Because the unique zoo tax is spread across all the counties adjacent to Detroit. The nature center was meant to be a way for some of that money to be invested back into a community outside of Detroit and expand the zoo's programs across a greater area.

Michigan zoo introduces world to its new, adorable red panda

New female red panda has been successfully introduced to the zoo’s male, Ravi:

Ginger, who was born on June 21, 2021, arrived at the Detroit Zoo from Zoo Boise in Idaho at the end of October 2022. She was introduced to Ravi, the only other red panda currently living at the Detroit Zoo, a month later.

The two are now sharing a habit in the Zoo’s Red Panda Forest. Ginger is exploring her new home and enjoys being outside with Ravi and can usually be seen up in the trees as red pandas love to climb to get a better view of their surroundings.

Just announced today, the name of the building is called "The Grotto." Some photos were posted on Facebook.
