San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park News 2022

Visited the safari park for the first time in a while yesterday and noted some things:

-Almost all of the birds are currently off exhibit due to the bird flu (excluding a few birds in Mombassa Lagoon, the mesh aviaries, and Wings of the World)
-the former black-footed cat habitat next door to the sand cat habitat in Nairobi Village is currently home to an unsigned Dwarf Mongoose (I only saw one but there may be more)
-the regular Dwarf Mongoose habitat by Mombassa Lagoon had a sign saying the mongooses were off habitat
-one of the park's male slender-horned gazelles was sent down to the zoo recently but it looked like there were still 5-6 animals at the park, and oddly enough one of the younger animals was pacing right at the front of their habitat
-a breeding pair of okapi were on habitat (presumably the zoo's pair Zuri and Subira who are temporarily at the safari park) and it looked to me like Subira may be pregnant
-the park recently received a 16-month old male generic giraffe named Rook from Fossil Rim Wildlife Center to be their new breeding bull and he was attempting to breed one of the much larger adult females (unsuccessfully of course!)
-there is still a decent sized herd of Zambezi Red Lechwe in the African Forest field habitat
-the Central Africa field habitat looked pretty empty, I only saw Greater Kudu, Roan, Grevy's Zebra, and a single Sitatunga; I wonder if the kob are still around as I did not see any and they were to be phased out iirc
-there are still some Barbary deer left in North Africa and for the first time ever, our tour guide pointed them out which was really nice
-I did not go on the Cart/Caravan Safari but I recently found out there are only 2.4 GOHR at the park (not 2.6 as I had previously believed) and it appears females Tanaya and Carole are no longer there
-the elephant viewing area has been closed for construction and the new viewing area is behind the Herb Garden, and according to the docent there, construction should take about 2 years
-didn't get to see the new bull African elephant Musi but I was told they're slowly introducing him to the cows and it's hoped that he'll breed with all the other cows but his mom Ndula
-the park has a new female Southern Pudu, named Posey, and has a breeding recommendation with male, Andy (unsure where his previous mate and daughter went)
-there was at least one kangaroo joey in the Walkabout, quite possibly a few others as well

I really wish I got to see the Barbary deer, I thought I saw some female kob in the field with the larger Buffalo herd

Two younger gorillas, Frank and Monroe, have been moved to a new habitat in the Safari Park :) It seems to have stemmed from challenging Winston. The video posted on their Twitter shows off what appears to be the former bonobo habitat but not 100% sure. Link is to posting on Twitter showing the video.

That’s an unexpected move. I thought the two boys were rotating the main habitat with Winston and the girls as of the last few years.

Also, where’s the former Bonobo habitat located in the zoo?

It's no longer viewable to the public. It's tucked away next to back-of-house areas near the south end of the park and could only ever be seen from the old monorail ride.

According to socials they can be seen ‘during a Wildlife Safari experience on their way to the field habitats during their tour’ .

I presume this is a different enclosure then?

If its the habitat I’m thinking of, then yes you can see it via a Wildlife Safari experience. I saw a couple of gibbon there prior to their move to the Lemur Walk. Again, I never got to see the bonobos or do the monorail however have heard of the bonobo habitat before in other threads

Not necessarily zoo news, but on December 17th, it was reported that the zoo euthanized a (1.0) mountain lion named P-22, who became famous locally for roaming the grounds of Griffith Park. He was around 11-12 years old, and passed due to a number of serious injuries and chronic health problems.

Mountain Lion P-22, the `Hollywood Cat,’ Is Euthanized at San Diego Zoo Safari Park – NBC 7 San Diego

This news should've probably deserved it's own thread imo; not in the Safari Park news thread.

Does anyone know where the path for the new Elephant Valley would start at? I was also wondering if there is any birds eye view concept art for the exhibit.
