Marwell Wildlife Marwell 2022 News

On the contrary ...
I read one review recently where the reviewer was seemingly complaining about how antelopes constituted a considerable fraction of Marwell's animal collection, asking that the antelopes would deserve their own section whilst the 'more interesting animals' are easier to find !
They aren't necessarily the most interesting animals for the public, not in quantity anyway. The current organisation is left with the legacy of previous owner John Knowles who envisaged a Catskill Game Farm type of set-up. Its not necessarily what general public are most interested in- they want big cats, primates, all the ABC species.

Yes only three female Arabian Oryx, no male.
Go back twenty years, had ten species cat.

I assume this entails:

Cheetah
Sand Cat
Black-Footed Cat
Ocelot
Serval
Caracal
Jaguar
Leopard
Tiger
Snow Leopard

From what I recall, the Black-footed cat lived less than a year ...

It's sad to see a once wonderful collection dwindle down to a shadow of itself, Marwell was known for its outstanding antelope collection, But really would it really come down to a cost factor? since they are a grass based diet?, can it be overly expensive to feed an antelope/s

I was wrong it was eleven had both Amur and Persian Leopards the rest are correct.

And not kept at Marwell at the same time.
The Marwell AGR for 2002,list both Amur and Persian Leopards held at Marwell, When the new Leopard enclosure opened in 2003, and after the tragic death of one of the Amur Leopards, for a short time you could see an Amur Leopard on one side of the Leopard enclosure and on the other a Persian Leopard, as seen by me and also mentioned in the Marwell Zoo newsletter of the time.

As much as I appreciate your posts on the thread, this is one of the times I think it calls for a correction:
Marwell Zoological Park
This animal list from 2003 lists both Persian and Amur Leopards.
Persian Leopards lives at Marwell until 2005.
One can make a point that perhaps Marwell was maintaining all ten species of cat before the arrival of Amur Leopards - dependent, of course, on whenever the short-lived BFC arrived.

I stand corrected and most interesting to "discover" that these two sub-species were housed in the same building.

Just seen theyre ripping the train track up at Marwell. Im hoping theyve got plans and they arent just taking it away.

Marwell seems to have gone down hill alot in the past few years sadly.

They replaced the track train with a road train already
Road Train at Marwell Zoo | Plan your visit

“After more than 40 years service, our Princess Anne loco, carriages and track have sadly come to the end of their life. The zoo layout has changed a lot during the last four decades and the railway no longer gives our guests the best possible views.”

The tracks aren’t required by the road version.

The article on the website does mention new developments for that part of the zoo.

With the financial hit they would have taken during the pandemic I guess expecting the Wetlands plans to be resurrected is unrealistic. Could it be a subset of wetlands or a completely different lower cost development?

There is talk of plans for next year but not Wetlands do not think the money to do it is there, I am sure when the zoo is ready it will reveal them, the rail train again was just to expensive to keep going, and would cause problems for any new development.

The road 'train' has been at the park for years, long before the actual railway closed.

'no longer gives our guests the best possible views' gives me a chuckle, pretty much admitting 'nothing to see here folks!' especially with the macaques gone and many of the enclosures along the old railway now empty or home to a few residents.

The pair of Marabou Storks have left and moved to Whipsnade.
That is ... a bit ominous ...
From what I recall, the 'Marabou Mansions' at Marwell was once a multi-purpose aviary with various birds - though over the years the number of species held in that aviary declined until only the Marabou remained.
I do wonder what will come out of this, as the enclosure was something rather 'general' in itself ... could be any number of animals.
Or maybe it is merely a temporary move in wake of Avian Flu?
