Zoochat Big Year 2022

last month i when birding at Farquhar inlet near Taree. I saw a plover that looked to me to be a kentish plover. I didn't add it to my list because i wasn't confident in my ID. At the moment there is a bit of discussion on the Aussie twitchers page, Australian bird id page and NSW rare bird page on facebook about a bird seen yesterday. It's the bird i believe i saw. Once it's ID is confirmed i will be adding it to my list. A great end to my year if it's a kentish plover.

The first half of 2022 was pretty terrible for me when it came to wildlife-watching, but towards the end of the year things turned around. I made three major trips last year, and considering the pandemic, and the fact that I typically don’t travel a lot, this is more than satisfactory.
The trip to Bhadra Tiger Reserve I have already talked about. A further trip to the Mysore area was also very fruitful. Though I did not get any lifers, I got to see the historic Mysore zoo again, and also visit multiple protected areas: Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, Nagarhole National Park, and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The highlights were not one but two packs of dhole, and four tusked elephants seen in a single day (across three districts mind you), which are both records for me.
The third trip to the Narmada district in Gujarat was a school trip, so the main focus was not on wildlife, but avifauna varies extraordinarily across India, so I guess I should not be surprised that I saw many birds which are rarely reported here.
I also continued exploring in and around Bangalore, and so managed to tick off a few long-awaited species and see a number. One major change for me in these past four months is that I got an opportunity to go on nocturnal walks, which enabled me to see both a number of new species, esp. invertebrates, and get to see a few familiar species more clearly than before. Unfortunately it was not possible to identify a lot of the species seen conclusively, but it was definitely extremely enjoyable. I also tried to strart learning to identify a few of the local butterflies and spiders, but I am still very much a beginner, so most of the listed species were identified by my friends.

3. Bengal Monitor Varanus benghalensis (from Bhadra)

I’m quite pleased with this year’s overall talley, with 127 being my highest bird total since I started participating in these Big Years. I got a total of 26 new bird species plus three new ‘soft’ lifers where I didn’t actually ID the exact species or it was a heard only. Seeing the leopard at Bhadra and two new bat species was also excellent.
This year I will try to be more regular with my updates. Hopefully my write ups this year were of interest to a couple of members at least. I wish everyone a happy new year.

Here is my final list for this year, which includes 5 additional species seen since October. I unfortunately came down with a terrible stomach flu while in Dallas, and I missed the opportunity to both visit the Dallas Zoo and go birding, and extra schoolwork + family issues making it harder for me to go birding these past few months. I hope to pick up more steam at the start of the new year, though my total likely won't be as impresive as last year due to the lack of vacations. Anyhow, here is this years list!

(There were plenty of other invert Species I saw this year that I didn’t bother writing down, since I am awful at identifying insects.)
Just realized I listed African Sacred Ibis twice . My count for birds is now at 205

I'll post all the totals for the year in about a week or so, which will give time for anybody who hasn't had the time to update to get their results in.

I did add some more species during the last 4 months, but will not be updating as I can’t be bothered to check what I did see at the beginning of the year. Best addition was Pallid Swift as a U.K. tick.

On the 21st of December, I went on my first ever international trip focused solely on birding (and wildlife-watching in general). I've always had a particular affection for Afrotropical birds so I decided to go to Ghana, one of the most accessible countries to see the Upper Guinea endemics and African birds in general.

Right as I arrived and birded at the Sakumono lagoons in Accra on the first day, I was blown away by the sheer number of birds and the amount of really good species! There's no way for me to highlight all of them as I've had 329 additions on this trip of which all but 6 were lifers but to list some:

- Seeing White-necked picathartes obviously, THE bird people come to Ghana for
- The gorgeous Egyptian plover on the banks of the White Volta at Daboya
- The sheer amount of species seen from certain families like barbets and tinkerbirds (13 species), the bee-eaters (6 species), the kingfishers (12 species), the hornbills (8 including some very rare ones like Black-casqued hornbill) etc...
- Seeing some rare species that seldom get reported from Ghana like Bates's swift, Dwarf bittern, Dusky tit, Forest penduline-tit etc...
- The last day of the year spent at Mole National Park with probably my best birding day ever: 133 species seen (by far a record for me) and the joy of birding Guinean woodland savannas and all the gorgeous birds that come with it (including some common species here that I've been wanting to see for forever like Brubru or Senegal eremomela)

The mammals were mostly a by-catch of birding even though spotlighting was very much done to see both night birds and mammals. The uncontested highlight in this category was seeing a Long-tailed pangolin right by the side of the road at the very logged Nsuta forest! The poor chap was trying to cross the road and many passer-by asked us if we were going to eat it (sadly pangolin is readily consumed in Ghana). We managed to put it in a spot inside the forest deep enough where it hopefully won't be caught...

Apart from the pangolin, species like Pel's anomalure, West African potto, Lesser spot-nosed guenon, African forest elephant, Gambian mongoose, Common cusimanse etc... were obviously fantastic, as was observing species that are more common elsewhere but particularly hard in Ghana (like White-tailed mongoose, Spotted hyena and Roan antelope on the last day at Mole). I'm also happy I got to see some very range-restricted species such as Kintampo rope squirrel and Small sun squirrel (the squirrel diversity here in general is impressive).

The other groups of animals were also fun to observe but I haven't identified everything and I don't think I'll be able to do so in time with how little wifi I get here. The highlight from those were West African crocodile and seeing multiple Dwarf crocodiles at the pools at Ankasa NP.

I've got 8 more days before I head back to Morocco so hopefully the start of 2023 wildlife-wise will be just as good :D

Round-up post of 2022!

First, the last "additions". Got one new butterfly from Greece (identified from a picture) and I've noticed I've neglected to update my fish list here, so I've put the entire (5 whole species!) list below.

Butterflies
47. Pigmy Skipper, Geneges pumilio

Fish

1. Three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus
2. European Eel, Anguilla anguilla
3. European Perch, Perca fluvatilis
4. European Chub, Squalius cephalus
5. Common Rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus

-----------------

As for my totals:

While I never did reach my ambitious year goals (mostly because of changing circumstances), I nonetheless had my best year ever in terms of birds with 283 species seen of which 46 were lifers (~16%). Of those lifers, 40 were seen in Lesvos (~87%) and 6 in the Netherlands. The Dutch lifers comprised of two common seabirds that I manage to miss so far (Razorbill and Black-legged kittiwake), one rare winter visitor (Atlantic puffin) and three vagrants (Green-winged teal, Great sand plover, Wilson's phalarope). Highlights among the Lesvos lifers are Masked shrike, Cinereous bunting, Eleonora's falcon, Yelkouan shearwater, Rüppell's warbler, Krüper's nuthatch and Spotted crake.

2022 was my second-best year for mammals with 22 species seen, of which 6 were lifers (~27%). The lifers include three species from Lesvos (Mediterranean vole, Caucasian squirrel, Northern white-breasted hedgehog), the European hamster from Vienna, a bat seen at work (Nathusius's pipistrelle) and finally my first wild cetacean (Harbour porpoise). Most surprising is the lack of large mammals (no fallow deer, no red deer, no boar) which is mostly the reason I did better with mammals four years ago.

For herptiles 2022 was also my very best year. I saw 21 species of which 13 were lifers (~62%). Every species from Lesvos was a lifer, and ever life this year came from Lesvos. Highlights include Masked dwarf snake, Starred Agama, Snake-eyed skink and Greek tortoise, but the very best species for me was probably the Sheltopusik or European glass lizard.

In terms of fish 2022 was the second best year, but that does not say much given that I only saw five species total, of which 2 were lifers (40%): European eel and European chub.

For butterflies last year was my very best year ever with 47 species seen, of which 15 were lifers (~32%). One lifer is from the Netherlands (Southern small white), ten from Lesvos (including Spotted Fritillary, Eastern festoon and Nettle-tree butterfly) and four from the small trip to Vienna in summer, which included my favourite butterfly from the year: Lesser purple emperor.

Finally, for dragonflies 2022 was the second best year. Had I managed to free up more time for dragonfly-searching in summer I would likely have broken my record, as a lot of reasonably doable Dutch species were missing. In total, I got 32 species with 3 lifers (~10%). All lifers (Small skimmer, Odalisque and Dark Spreadwing) were from Lesvos.

All things considered I had a great year wildlife year with a lot of very good sightings. Let's hope 2023 will be just as good!

Forgot to update this thread after a certain point, my bad! Here's the full 2022 list, 666 species in total - much higher than I ever could have anticipated at the beginning of the year! I have removed a few entries that were either accidentally repeated, or I have lost faith in the ID.

Bold indicates lifers - of which there are loads!

7. European Perch - Perca fluviatilis
