Zoochat Challenge North America 2023

King Kong for me! My home zoo is Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, which has quite a few primates.

I will be going for primates for now, simply because they interest me more than reptiles. We will see how I am feeling come the end of April. I don't foresee being a much of contender in either category as I have no intentions on making a big trip this year like I've done every year for the past five years, but you never know.

In the spirit of being better at posting updates, I have a total of ZERO after going to the Queens Zoo today. As they don't have any primates or lizards, or any reptiles, signed or exhibited. Although I knew I wouldn't be able to get a head start their today anyways. The same will not be said for the Bronx Zoo tomorrow. Shame I have to go back to work on Tuesday, if only I could just go to zoos everyday.

I flipped a coin to make the choice. Primates it is. I will be trying to participate in the global challenge this year, so just want to confirm any zoo/species can be used for both?

Since I tend to see more reptiles than primates in the zoos I tend to visit, I'll go with lizards.

Sure - I counted the same zoos and species for both last year.

Global is the same kind of game that North America is, but it's a completely separate competition run by a different person; your participation in that game has no impact or relation to this one.

Visited two facilities today, a planned visit to one and an unplanned visit to another, for a great first day of zoo visits in 2023. This is a really big start of the year, and I'm looking forward to actually seeing more Primates in the future:

New England Aquarium:
0. Zookeeper- Homo sapiens Yes, humans are Primates. Yes, I realize that neither the human hand I saw feeding an octopus nor the entire humans I saw in the penguin pools count as Primates for this challenge.

Boston Museum of Science:

This is where I should've gotten a primate, but unfortunately the cottontop tamarins were a no-show. Luckily this is a species I'm extremely likely to see at some other point this year (and I'm willing to bet that anyone even competitive for first place will see this species at one time or another as it's one of the most common zoo primates).

So a great start to the year, visiting two facilities and seeing a whopping total of ZERO primate species! Had I opted for Lizards, I would've done only marginally better, with three species at the museum. Luckily, I think that I'll see more primates at other zoos I visit this year.

First zoo of the year and I've got quite the hefty haul! Missed the Children's Trail due to time constraints and my poor, starving phone battery, but I can get those simians later!

  1. Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx)
  2. Hamadryas Baboon (Papio hamadryas)
  3. Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)
  4. Buff-Cheeked Gibbon (Nomascus gabriellae)
  5. Red Ruffed Lemur (Varecia rubra)
  6. Common Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri sciureus)
  7. Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya)
  8. White-Faced Saki (Pithecia pithecia)
  9. Geoffroy's Spider Monkey (Ateles geoffroyi)
Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. Anyways, I can get at 5 more primates at Henry Vilas (6 if I'm lucky), maybe 2 more if I return to Phoenix, Wildlife World is a primate goldmine (if you can sift through all the repeats), but then I'm stuck. I want to visit the Chicago area during my spring break, and maybe San Diego during summer break, but those are gonna need some heavy planning. Milwaukee is another option, but I'm reluctant to visit. Anyways, good luck everyone!

And yet you're still leading :p

First zoo of the year and I've got quite the hefty haul!

I got from context that this was Phoenix Zoo, but don't forget to list the zoo(s) with each update.

20. Silvery Leaf Monkey Bronx Zoo 1/8/2022
22. Silvery Lutang Bronx Zoo 1/8/2022

Same species, so you're at 22.

I made a zoo visit after I finished birding today, in an effort to give @nczoofan someone to compete against... only to return home, log on, and find two new entries for Team Lizard :p no primates at this one or my next planned visit, so I'll stick with this for now and see how I feel later.

Lizards
California Living Museum (Jan 8)

1. Common Chuckwalla (Sauromalus ater)
2. Desert Iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis)
3. Southern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria multicarinata)
4. Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum)
