Ouwehands Zoo Ouwehands Dierenpark, Rhenen

It's bizarre that keepers wouldn't be able to identify the gender of a large (and extremely popular) animal such as a Giant Panda for more than 2 years after the birth!

It’s surprisingly common. It’s happened a couple of times in recent years at Zoo Atlanta with their Giant panda and there’s also been a number of incidents with red pandas. Wellington Zoo sent a male named Sir Ed to Europe - with the panda renamed Hillary after it was discovered it was a female.

The Smithsonian National Zoo avoid the problem by submitting DNA tests (primarily to determine paternity if semen from more than one male was used; but also to ascertain gender). It’s surprising zoos holding this species don’t do these tests routinely given the comparatively minimal cost.

I has happened in the 1970's in Paris zoo (the "pair of pandas" offered by China were indeed 2 males), but that was a quite remote time and I believed the technologies have improved since.

Ouwehands mentioned that the koalas will be housed in a large new area called "The Australian Experience". It will be an area of 1800m2 with an 170m2 "indoor garden" in the middle, housing the koalas. They will have access to outside enclosures as well as night quarters.

Zegersbouw will be building the new enclosure, they have confirmed that they will also be building a new butterfly greenhouse and a new enclosure for the Sun bears!
(It's unclear weather the Sun bears will be included in the Australian experience)

This was also combined with a small model revealing part of the design:

While it can be hard to judge the actual size from a scale model, to me the outside enclosures look quite small. But I guess we have to wait to see if this will actually be the case.

True, but koalas don't really require that much space. Koalas usually only have an indoor box enclosure, so having the enclosure double in size with an extra outside box

Preparations have been made for the start of construction of "The Australian Experience". The building will be in the heart of the zoo between the gorillas, polar bears and sea lions. Construction is expected to start in February 2023. Ouwehands Dierenpark's ceo also said on Facebook that the koalas for Ouwehands will come from San Diego Zoo.

In the movie "De Stamhouder, session 6" appears a zoo with bavians and asian elephants.
Anyone an idea in which zoo these scene took place?

According to the series in takes place in Amsterdam, but it isn't Artis. I thought it was filmed in Amersfoort atleast the elephant enclosure looked like it. The baboon enclosure however was different to the one in Amersfoort.

But perhaps this discussion could be better held in a separate thread ;)

The clouded leopards have received breeding recommendation from the EEP again.
I was at Ouwehands today and I got conformation from a keeper that the female clouded leopard is already pregnant and offspring are due soon.

Fan Xing, the giant panda born in 2020
Fan Xing will be moved back to China at the end of the year. However this might be delayed because of the strict covid regulation and import rules. Once she's moved the pair is already approved to produce more offspring.

The gibbons that were kept with the Gorilla"s were moved to Colombia. They are thinking of getting a collobus species to complete the enclosure.

Also one of the Golden-headed lion tamarin escaped for apparently not the first time. The individual didn't leave the building and was just sitting on the net trying to keep close to the others.

Sorry if some of the news is repeated.
