The Trumpeter swan exhibit is finally getting renovated.

That is extremely unexpected but very exciting news! I’m so glad the Los Angeles Zoo is FINALLY opening newly renovated or entirely new exhibits again. Looking forward to see how the newly renovated Trumpeter Swan exhibit and the new Cape Vulture Aviary turn out!

Jewel the Asian Elephant cow has died. She was sixty-one years old. She is survived by one bull and two cows, including her longtime companion Tina, who is fifty-nine.
It's normally a good idea to include a source in a post like this. Sad news for sure, but if this is true then I'm sure the zoo's social media or a news outlet is reporting it, and there's an appropriate source to include with the news post.

Indeed but she had a really good life at the Los Angeles Zoo. I saw Jewel a lot during my childhood and she was a joy to watch and was well cared for.
It'll be interesting to see what direction LA goes once these remaining cows/bull die. They have a wonderful facility, but not sure whether they want to go the route of holding a breeding herd or holding a bachelor herd, which they might be better equipped for.
I’ve always thought they should breed Billy but again, that’s just my opinion.
If they wish to go the route of holding a breeding herd, than there's no reason why they can't acquire new females following the current two females deaths, and use Billy as the breeding bull.
Especially in light of the zoo's recent targeting by ARAs over elephants, I would not be surprised if the zoo opts to replace the elephants with rhinos, or some other use of this space. I'm not saying this is the most likely option, or the option they'll end up taking, but I feel that any conversation about the zoo's future with elephants needs to consider the possibility that elephants aren't a part of the zoo's long-term plans, for better or for worse.
I reckon the recent targeting by said ARAs is a last-ditch effort given one of the councilmen that sympathizes with that movement is due to leave office in March...
Two females? I thought only Jewel had passed away?
They're referring to when the remaining two females (Shaunzi and Tina) pass. At that point, the zoo could seek to acquire new females.
Where did the Ruppell's Sand Fox come from? AFAIK, this is the only AZA park with this species.
Jewel is dearly missed by us all who got to see her. I miss seeing the 3 girls eating together, Tina was her sister essentially and would never be far from her. I remember seeing when they allowed Billy to interact with the ladies, Jewel would want to be near him and he seemed respect her boundaries when she also needed space. My heart goes out to the staff and anyone else who was touched by Jewel.
As far as I know, the zoo still is dedicated to displaying elephants and in fact increasing the exhibit size by almost twice based on the vision plan. But as mentioned by others, things can change due decisions made by the city due to pressure from ARAs.

I sincerely hope the zoo does NOT phase out Asian Elephants. ARA’S I highly doubt even cate about those elephants in Los Angeles and are just doing it to get attention.
That I don't know but I believe they'd been in an off exhibit area for awhile. If I remember correctly, they were in one of the exhibits in the closed off roundhouse across from the white-cheeked turaco exhibit.
On an unrelated but sad note, the colobus keeper mentioned to me today that the baby born last month passed away.
