Not really difficult at all - it is clearly an aquarium store. Almost all the fish are stock for sale, they propagate corals for sale, they sell aquarium supplies. The only thing which makes it not "just" a really fancy aquarium store is the $5 entry fee, but that is refunded with any $5 purchase in the store.

Their business model is just as much an aquarium. The vast majority of people who come in are families who want to visit "the aquarium". Only colorful and showy species are sold so they entertain guests more. These facts, more so than the admission fee, are why I think it counts as an aquarium as well as a aquarium store.

Mmm, but when the bulk of the displays are for sale I think it’s stretching the definition of a ‘public aquarium’ past its natural breaking point, I’m afraid.

Where is the line drawn? I've had no problems with including Alligator Alley in the past, and perhaps half of the animals and displays there are for sale. And while the bulk of the displays are for sale at Sanctuary Aquatics, about half of the species aren't (ignoring corals, of course).

I don't know what Alligator Alley is, sorry.

I'm not the one responsible for making a call on this store's eligibility for the game - I'll leave that to the organisers. What I *can* decide is whether I think a place is a 'zoo' or 'aquarium' and, personally, I wouldn't count a visit to Sanctuary Aquatics on my life zoo list any more than I do the Coburg Aquarium store here in Melbourne, which similarly has a number of permanent display tanks (albeit, no entry fee).

That can be said about nearly any larger pet store or fish store, though. People go to petsmart just to look at the animals. There's a huge store in PA with hundreds of tanks of fish for sale, a large stingray touch tank (with a fairly rare species), a herp room that has several residents, a bird rescue... several other ZCers have visited as well, and we've all gotten lifers there. But it's still a store, not an aquarium/zoo.

The key part here is that people think of it as an aquarium, not as an aquarium store. That's what they (at least too some degree) market themselves as, and the fact that they have an admission fee is, I think, a big deal here. They also pretty much exclusively have showy and colorful species in order to specifically attract visitors who have interest in buying livestock. The owners of the facility seem to see it as just as much aquarium as aquarium store.

Alligator Alley (assuming you mean the Wisconsin one) bills themselves as a "reptile zoo" (per their instagram) that also has some animals for sale in their store, with the focus being on that. On tripadvisor and yelp, which their website links to, they're listed as "theme park". Sanctuary Aquatics calls themselves a "pet store" all over their social media.

Every press release, their social media, etc. refers to it as an aquatic pet store. Having an entry fee doesn't change what it is, stores can have those, too.

They are listed online as an aquarium store, and that is what they are, regardless of their tank size. Not much different from That Pet Place or some other bigger aquarium stores I've been to. If I go to a big reptile expo that charges an entry fee I can't count species from that here. Also admission fee is a bit of a moot point anyway when there are full on zoos with free admission. ;)
This seems to me a lot of fuss and argument for the inclusion of one species to the list - albeit a common one at that.

I'm seeing a few errors in these challenges.

For the Red List one I query the inclusion of Reticulated Giraffe (treated as hybrid in the USA zoos) and also the several subspecies included (Malayan and Siberian Tiger, and Amur Leopard) - I'm not sure if subspecies count? Also there needs to be four species used in each category (VU, EN, CR) not three.

For the Usborne Challenge there are only 13 species not 15 there because both Cassowary and Kiwi are duplicated.

For the Rio Challenge two of those species are not from South America.

Giraffe is a bit silly. Nobody truly knows where the "pure" giraffes have been. For all you know they might be the town tart.

Their business model is just as much an aquarium. The vast majority of people who come in are families who want to visit "the aquarium". Only colorful and showy species are sold so they entertain guests more. These facts, more so than the admission fee, are why I think it counts as an aquarium as well as a aquarium store.
