Other 2021 News:

On February 5th, the zoo announced they broke ground on a new Amur leopard holding facility which would be built by May. It would include the facility as well as a day room where guests can view the leopards when they aren't in their exhibit.

Groundbreaking for Amur Leopard Holding Facility

On February 10th, the zoo announced that they have acquired a (1.0) eastern screech owl named Captain which is now one of their newest ambassador animals.

On February 12th, the zoo announced that the Primate Row area is now officially opened and that their black and white ruffed lemurs, Schmidt's red-tailed guenons, black-headed spider monkeys, and Angola colobus monkeys are now back on exhibit.

On March 18th, the zoo announced they are building a giraffe feeding platform that should open by July 1st.

What's New at the Zoo

On April 29th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (1.1) of southern screamers and are located in the lagoon exhibit. Also on April 29th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (1.0) chinchilla named Zucco as an animal ambassador.

On May 21st, the zoo announced that they have acquired a (1.0) American alligator. This will be the first time in 12 years the zoo has held the species. On July 1st, the zoo announced his name after a public vote, Big Al.

On June 1st, the zoo announced they have acquired (0.0.14) Chilean flamingos.

On June 3rd, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.1) barred owl named Whitney, as well as a (0.1) Harris's hawk. The barred owl will be located in the barnyard area, while the Harris's hawk will be located next to the ocelots.

On July 15th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.1) Eurasian eagle owl.

On August 14th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.0.1) Chinese crocodile lizard and is located in the Ektopia area.

On September 9th, the zoo announced they have acquired (2.0) Kunekune pigs named Bill and Ted.

On November 16th, the zoo announced they have acquired (0.0.2?) black-breasted leaf turtles and are located in the Ektopia area.

Wasn't Frank the zoo's only red panda, or am I mistaken? I was last there about 3 months ago, and at the time they said their only red panda was on loan elsewhere. They were using its enclosure for one of their ocelots. Very sad news if they've truly stepped away from red pandas altogether.

Among the projects the state funds will help:

- A new Africa Plaza with an ADA compliant pathway and possibly a new exhibit

- A giraffe feeding platform

- A siamang exhibit and orangutan holding area renovations to meet Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) standards

- A farmyard renovation to make the area larger and bring an educational component
 
Huh. Didn’t realize it was more than just the lions giving them troubles with the AZA. Greenville’s problem with its larger species is that the property is small and built onto a hill. The giraffe platform and AZA accessibility changes are good but the Africa area’s problem is just that they don’t have a lot of room to expand their small exhibits for lions / giraffes. Ideally they’d just pick one, ditch the other, but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

Now it's a long shot but imagine how funny it would be if Providence came to Providence, Rhode Island.

This might be less of a long shot than you think. Roger Williams does keep masai giraffes, and currently only have two. Historically, they've often kept more giraffes than this and do have the room to accommodate an additional giraffe. I do agree this would be an interesting/humorous turn of events, but is certainly within the realm of possibility.
 
A new small mammal exhibit is enticing, but I’m going to assume it’s just going to be meerkats. I recall a different species of mongoose (banded?) being discussed in previous plans, but I’m not optimistic.
