Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2023

There appears to be a picture on Facebook of a baby Tree Kangaroo at Chester. :D What is in the water at the place? Even by Chester standards recent breeding success is incredible!!

By the way, does anyone know what the current situation is with the Tree Kangaroos? I wasn't even sure they had a female there anymore!

Earlier last year Sangria died. There is a male called Kayjo from Belfast and there was a female offshow over at holding.
Kayjo had been on show for a while, but it appears that he has gone back to holding and that the female is now on show with a Joey !

The female is Kitiwa who came from Bristol zoo.

Amazing, another first for Chester. Truly a great start to the year.

I'm no expert but if a joey is showing doesn't this mean it is at least a few months old.

Thanks to you and derek for the info - most interesting, and very much appreciated.

Do you know how long Kitiwa has been at Chester?

just the one now

When did all the cheetah die? Last I heard(few years ago now) there was Matrah,Burbah,Singah, Kinky Tail (KT) Adaze plus cubs( one died) appreciate I'm a fair few years out of touch, do we know the years they died?

*edit* I've discovered that of the 4 cubs born in June 2011 2 of them (Kinza & Shendi) died in November 2011.

Matrah died in 2019
Adaze died in 2021
KT died in 2018
Kinky tails cub safi died in 2017
Kinky tails two male cubs from 2011 moved to a zoo in Germany in early 2013
Kt's male cub from 2013 bakari moved to a zoo In 2015
And one of the 2 elderly boys died last year
So it's just the one remaining male left now

I actually hadn't realised they were only down to one cheetah now, if the last one does die within the next year or so I can't imagine them being replaced until Heart of Africa is open when the painted dogs have moved back. That's if Chester even continue to keep cheetah after this, they could repurpose the enclosure for another species for all we know.

I'm hoping that they bring in a young breeding a group because I would love to see cheetah cubs at the zoo again it's such a shame that they didn't manage to get any cubs from adaze when she was at breeding age

I think they'll wait until Heart of Africa is complete and move the painted dogs back.

Kayjo will have not have gone to the offsite holding area but to the off show enclosure on Islands the other side of the Tree Kangaroo walkthrough.

We mention that Chester has 1 Cheetah left but what about the Jaguars as the zoo only has 1 male left now?

Does Chester zoo plan to phase out jaguars for good or just planning to replace Napo with another jaguar once he passes on?
