Not even going to give this organization the dignity of recognition or web traffic, so if someone else could take one for the team as to why these zoos are on this nebulous, arbitrary, flat-out nonsensical list, that would be amazing. Restraining myself from going into a further tirade in response to this absolute stupidity. Honestly I'm irritated just thinking about it.

It's my favorite time of the year!!! Without even looking it up I can tell why several of these are on here (cause they do this every year and so repetitive)
Omaha- pregnant elephants
Indy- probably do to herpes
Tulsa- new exhibit
Cincy- the new exhibit and impending import
Oregon- cause the think Pachy is still alive (lol)
Ft Worth- new exhibit and births/pregnancy
Houston- could go several ways but probably past herpes situations
Sedgewick- the import (almost 10 years ago)
KC- maybe Tamani?
ATL- sort of new exhibit?

I'll look later to see if I'm right

Ok, I gave the article a quick skim-me-do, and the general consensus is that these zoos are on the naughty list because they are or already have expanded their elephant exhibits????
Of course they only include accredited zoos and not the truckload of actually ****** zoos with way worse conditions for elephants
Exactly! I’m surprised by the lack of San Antonio, who had two deaths last year and still have one elephant in the country’s ugliest elephant exhibit (in my opinion). I’m also baffled by lack of Bronx (who had the Happy lawsuit), Columbus (who lost Beco to EEHV), or really any zoos who had anything notable happen with their elephants last year. Most of the zoos on this list are here because of stuff from years before, which defeats the entire purpose of a yearly list! At this rate, might as well call this the “Top 10 Zoos that Have Elephants” list, because none of these zoos are all that bad.

I don't care to give attention to these lists anymore because it's all just a load of nonsense. However, I do want to point out that based on the picks for this years list, they've apparently decided that Natural Bridge Zoo is a better facility for elephants than the ones listed above. That is... questionable to say the absolute least.

Of course we don't know who made this years dishonorable mention of the "hall of shame" so perhaps it's been placed there.

Nope, Fresno and Milwaukee. Ironically, Fresno makes more sense to be on the list than any of the actual top 10, in the sense that something actually happened there in 2022, not that it actually deserves to be there.

This is their biggest mental gymnastics yet. All twelve were on there for the same reason: the zoos built new, larger elephant exhibits, but these new, larger exhibits apparently still aren't big enough. So apparently it's a bad thing for zoos to be improving the care of their elephants, quite the mental gymnastics to get to that point, but I digress. IDA might be the organization I have the least respect for, out of anyone animal-related. I'm not opposed to creating these lists in theory, but by criticizing zoos who have incredible elephant programs while giving a pass to Myrtle Beach Safari and Natural Bridge Zoo. Until they make a list where these are Zoos #1 and #2, I simply can't take these lists seriously.

@Neil chace never take anything IDA says seriously. They don't even have the correct info on Asha (NB) or Bubbles ( Docs elephant). In fact the truly worst elephant situation flies under everyone's radar (tho maybe remedied soon) and IDA has admitted they don't even visit any of the facilities let alone get their facts correct

What a horrible list!

Oregon, Houston, Fort Worth and Omaha all have some of the best elephant complexes in the world imo.

It was relinquished by Pittsburgh not the other way around. The director at the time was quite bullheaded (to be honest, I completely agreed with her) and made a stand.

@Neil chace I'd love to say but it's in transition period and out of respect to parties involved I take the fifth....for now

@Joseph G Pittsburgh, like many, should never have been on the list.

I absolutely hate their indoor holding, so I’ll agree to disagree on this one :) (Not that I’m giving any credit to this list or its creator(s).)
