Perth Zoo Species gained and/or lost at Perth Zoo since 1992

(Forward note: If the administrators do not mind, would like to perhaps request that hopefully as more info and missed species are added over time will put in a request to update the initial lists much like some other threads)

Some of the mammal species (and sub-species) formerly kept at Perth Zoo which no longer are starting from January 1992:

WF lemurs were still at the zoo by 2000. Some surplus individuals went to NZ and Gorge WP.
Bushbabies were gone by early 90s at latest.
Not aware of any squirrel gliders in NocHouse; they were always sugar gliders. Possible that squirrels turned up later.
Rock wallabies - while zoo probably housed YF in past, they were Black-flanks in mid 90s. Narbelek arrived early 00s I think.
Antilopines left as early 96.
Serval died mid-late 90s.
Fennec Fox didn't arrive until 00s. None in NocHouse during 90s (at best last year).
Oryx left around 97, exhibit modified for hunting dogs.
Tahr left before 90s.
Pebble-mound mice were around for a number of years in 90s. Breeding was erratic if any. Died out well before 2000.

Mammal species already at Perth Zoo in 1992 that are still there though may have been short-periods of species absence for some:

Sumatran Orangutan
(Perth Zoo's legacy with these guys is already well documented on our regions forum by many awesome members informative posts over the years)
Javan (Silvery) Gibbon (Perth Zoo's legacy with these guys is already well documented on our regions forum by many awesome members informative posts over the years)
Northern White-Cheeked Gibbon (Perth Zoo's legacy with these guys is already well documented on our regions forum by many awesome members informative posts over the years. However as a side-note will add that male individual Phillip has now lived at Perth Zoo for approximately 48 years and is seemingly the longevity record holder for his species. Another side note is that for many years the individuals of this species at Perth Zoo were displayed simply as 'White-Cheeked Gibbons' with the species split by zoologists occurring between Southern and Northern White-Cheeked Gibbons in the early 2000s')
Hamadryas Baboon (individuals have changed and reduced in number, destined to be phased out of zoo, moved to current exhibit in 1996 though was a year of absence from the exhibit from mid '98-mid '99 while occupied by a trio of Chimpanzees from Taronga Zoo. The species is destined to be phased out from the zoo which I seriously thin Perth Zoo should reconsider)
Golden Lion Tamarin (Australasian Ceboidea (NW Monkey) Populations (Present and Historic))
Cotton-Top Tamarin (hopefully info on above thread coming soon)
Emperor Tamarin (hopefully info on above thread coming soon)
Common Marmoset (possibly not at Perth at start of 1992, hope to find out more)
Western or Eastern Pygmy Marmoset (Perth Zoo started again with non hybridized imports)
Ring-Tailed Lemur (at Perth Zoo in early 90s, more info hoping to find)
Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur (at Perth Zoo in early 90s, more info hoping to find)
Asian Elephant (current 1.1 arrived December 1992 but late great Tricia was there on her lonesome having arrived in 1963 and been solo since early 1970s, passed in July this year aged 65 after 59 years at Perth Zoo. The zoo plans to phase out their Asian Elephants so Permai 0.1 and Putra Mas 1.0 will go to other zoos in near future)
Southern White Rhinoceros (Memphis born in Memphis Zoo in 1987 was already at Perth Zoo since 1990, currently still resides at zoo as one of oldest residents with his son whos name I use to remember lol)
(Rothschild's) Giraffe (re-arrived at zoo in late 80s/early 90s after a period of species absence)
Plains Zebra (in 1990s and 00s were individuals from the Grant's Zebra subpopulation, believe Perth has continuously held Plains Zebras for many many decades)
(Southern African) Lion (30 years ago was male Alistair and a female who was possibly his mother until arrival of 0.2 Manzi and Mafuta in mid 1990s, now relatively new individuals with some charismatic individuals at the zoo inbetween)
Tiger (generic origin Tigers at Perth many decades, in 1994 the zoo joined regions Sumatran Tiger program with arrival of 1.0 Calang first in January of that year, followed by 0.1 Malu from New Zealand in 1999; both these individuals are now deceased but many individuals including their offspring and offspring's offspring have lived at Perth Zoo since, believe one male individual (a Sumatran) currently resides at the zoo)
Spotted Hyena (trio arrived from Berkeley USA in August/September of 1991, these individuals all now deceased and new individuals currently reside at the zoo)
African Wild Dog (a breeding trio at Perth Zoo in early 90s, other individuals at the zoo in 1980s and possibly late 70s, these individuals suffered a major loss in December 1998 due to eating horse meat of a chemically euthanised horse and several individuals died, new individuals arrived at Perth Zoo in early 2005 for opening of current large exhibit and have reproduced very productively also)
Dingo (individuals have changed of course)
Small-Clawed Otter (individuals have changed of course)
(Slender-Tailed) Meerkat (individuals have changed of course)
Ghost Bat (individuals have changed of course)
Koala (individuals have changed of course)
Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombat (individuals have changed of course)
Numbat (individuals have changed of course, Perth Zoo famous for major success in captive breeding and release of this highly endangered diurnal marsupial that is endemic to the south-west of Australia)
Chuditch (individuals have changed of course)
Common Brushtail Possum (individuals have changed of course)
Western Grey Kangaroo (individuals have changed of course)
Red Kangaroo (possibly)
Tammar Wallaby (possibly)
Western Brush-Wallaby (possibly)
Quokka (possibly)
Woylie (possibly)
Short-Beaked Echidna (may have been absent from Perth Zoo for certain periods)

some others I may have forgotten
Some more changes:
Common marmoset - mid 90s. all other callitrichids arrived for opening of Lesser Primates.
Giraffe and Zebra were not at the zoo for several years between the old hoofstock yards being demolished and the Savannah opening.
Hunting dogs - meat poisoning incident occurred when they were present in the old oryx/current hyena exhibit. Proved to be a result of accident contamination from euthanasia drugs in livestock.
Dingoes - period of absence until Australian Walkabout opened.
Several of the native species (red kangaroo, brush wallaby, echidna, woylie) have been absent for periods.

RE: Some Mammal species had forgotten about

Common Eland (a male was at Perth Zoo very early 90s, certainly in 1991, plans to have him co-habitate with Memphis the Southern White Rhino' didn't go to plan and do not know what happened to this individual, sent to Dubbo perhaps?)
Dromedary Camel (individuals still at PZ in late 1980s not sure when last died or left)
European Fallow Deer (individuals still at PZ in late 1980s not sure when last died or left)
Mara {Patagonian Cavy} (may have still been at Perth Zoo in 1992 but certainly gone for almost 30 years)

(side note: the zoos 2 Striped Hyenas departed for Singapore in 1991 so dont make the timeline I set up but just thought would give a little mention; were phased out by zoo at time the Spotted Hyenas were arriving at the zoo from the US)
A pair of eland were imported. Original plan of Savannah was to mix them with rhinos in same exhibit!

Some of the Reptile species which have arrived, departed or were already at Perth Zoo over the last 30 years

Shingleback Skinks
Western Blue-Tongue Skink
Northern Blue-Tongued Skink
Western Spiny-Tailed Skink

(Southwestern) Carpet Python
Olive Python
Woma Python
Black-Headed Python

Arrived in last 25 years but no longer held by Perth Zoo
American Alligator (juvenile individuals came sometime last twelve years, now gone)
Oblong Turtle (I believe Perth Zoo did keep this species, perhaps still do??)
Pink-Eared Turtle (arrived 1997 but now gone, year?)
Mitchell's Water Monitor (arrived 1997 but now gone, year?)
Western Bearded Dragon (I believe Perth Zoo did keep this species)
King Skink (I believe Perth Zoo did keep this species)
Lancelin Island Skink (arrived 1997 but died at some point)
Reticulated Python (I think may have arrived 1997 but since died)
Madagascar Tree Boa (came and gone, believe only died a few years back)

Species already at Perth Zoo in early 1990s but now gone
Greek Tortoise (departed some point in mid-late 1990s)
Green Iguana (individual kept next to Pythons at back of bird-feeding station just east of the Zoo's Main Lake, occasionally kept in the Walk-Through exhibit of Lesser Primates as Tetrapod has pointed out, gone by at least 1997)

Species already at Perth Zoo in early 1990s who still remain
Saltwater Crocodile (old individual swapped in 1998 for arrival of 1.0 Simmo from Northern Territory, was a brief period with no Saltie' when Simmo died in November 2018 but new individual (name?) now at the zoo)
Freshwater Crocodile
Radiated Tortoise
Western Swamp Tortoise (Turtle)
Boa Constrictor
(Believe Perth Zoo has continuously kept Boa Constrictors for more than 35 years although individuals most certainly have changed, perhaps short periods without though am unsure)
Some changes:
Many of the small turtles were confiscations.Could add Egyptian tortoise which was exported to Jersey mid 90s.
Many of the reptiles were brought in for the opening of the reptile house, but the line up has changed over time. Species that were present prior to this: WST, boa constrictor, saltwater/freshwater crocs, radiated tortoise, carpet python, blue-tongue/shingleback skinks, oblong turtle plus the confiscations.

Other points
Cassowary have been present at the zoo for many decades. Ostrich left mid 90s when they could be integrated into Savannah.
Misha, Marama and Anthony giraffes were all considered Rothschilds. Obviously the view now is that they be treated as subspecific hybrids.

@tetrapod I take it the Common Marmosets arrived as the Red-Handed Tamarins departed.

There were still Himalayan Tahr at the zoo in the early '90s, I saw them with my own eyes, I remember too because the opening of the Butterfly House in '95 I recognised the spot where has seen the Tahr ('Mountain Goats' as everyone called them) a year or two prior

Think you might be wrong on the tahr (although I'm not aware of the year of departure). Compare the two maps:
Map - 1975 - ZooChat
As you can see the enclosure was to the left of the crocodiles (which was part of old butterfly house area).
Map - 1987 - ZooChat
In the later map, they are definitely gone. I'd hazard a guess that they left mid 80s.
Interestingly I think the tahr mountain was repurposed in to the rock-wallaby exhibit in the Australian Bushwalk. I'm not sure whether it was moved (seems unlikely) or that it was the same location on the map. A bit hard to tell given the maps are quite stylised.

Thank you for this comprehensive thread @steveroberts :)

Out of the big four city zoos, Perth's collection is the one I am personally least familiar with, so it is great to learn more.

I note your entry about Fishing Cat being held from 2004 until 2008/09. I recalled reading here that Perth had held the species in the past, so great to have that confirmed. Do you have any more details on the specific individual(s)?

@Zoofan15 and I have been researching the historical Fishing Cat population, and have identified 5 cats born within the region whose identities or fates we haven't been able to determine. One of these is the male Beranang, born at Taronga in January 2002 to Fiddle and Pakikan, the rest we haven't identified (but were likely born at Melbourne Zoo).

I have found a research paper on golden cats which implies that Beranang had died or left Taronga by July 2004. If Perth received Fishing cat early in 2004, it's possible that this is where Beranang ended up; however, this would be my own speculation.

I concur that seems likely re. Beranang as Perth's holdings are unaccounted for amongst the cats we've identified.

Survival rate beyond the neonate stage is relatively high, so statistically it's more probable that Beranang was transferred rather than died.

With a new pair incoming at Taronga in 2005, they would have been keen to move him on ahead of this.

@Abbey Thanks heaps legend @Abbey @Zoofan15 Really enjoying you guys with the individual Fishing Cat info (think the Fishing Cat whether they were Beranang came from Melbourne Zoo in late September 2004 and passed away sadly possibly as early as 2008 but could have stilled been alive until sometime in 2009, sucks about the shorter lifespan unless there actually was a transfer..but I think it was a passing at Perth Zoo.

@tetrapod Thanks again mate for all the info and recollection. One thing I do have to say is that the Tahrs were definitely still at PZ in at least 1991 or 1992 cos I do remember seeing them at least once.

That’s interesting. Melbourne apparently still had them in 2012, so possibly this was the (imported) parent of their remaining cats and/or the parent of Imphal, who was born at Melbourne Zoo in 1998.

This would place that cats DOB as approximately mid-90’s, which would tie in with an average lifespan seeing it pass in 2008/2009.

It would also tie in with clear out Melbourne had around this time in transferring Imphal to Taronga the following year in 2005.

@tetrapod Apparently the last Mandrill died at the zoo on 6 April 1994; but didn't say whether it was female or male (I know you mentioned Boss was the name of the male Mandrill at PZ for a time). Am also assuming the last Mandrill's probably died at the zoo after being off public for a number of years.

In the 1991-1992 regional primate plan, the plan for 1992 was for Perth Zoo to reconsider their decision to phase this species out. It was recommended they perform a tubal ligation on their female if they wished to cease breeding, which would given them the option to hold a non breeding troop.

This implies the female wasn’t elderly (i.e. capable of reproduction), so possibly the male was the last Mandrill left at the zoo. A reproductive age female would be easier to assimilate into a troop than a male, so if she’s been left on her own, it’s likely she would have been transferred to Melbourne or Adelaide, who both held troops. Since we know the last Mandrill at Perth Zoo died, I’d assume it was a male.

Just found out from Perth Zoo that their 1.1 Siamang pair 'back in the day' were named Ringo (m) and Starr (f) named obviously after (my personal favourite) Beatles member. Starr passed away 18 August 1995. Ringo went to Mogo with a female WH Gibbon as @tetrapod told me but was later, not sure when.

Interesting! I imagine there was quite a few animals named after Ringo Starr throughout zoos (and homes) - since he’s a popular entertainer with a unique name. Marineland Napier had a California sea lion named Ringo, who arrived in 1965 and died at an estimated 23 years old in 1984.

@Zoofan15

Yeah can see the popularity with it, makes me wonder roughly men Ringo & Starr were born given their names?

I don't know how long Ringo remained in that aviary-style exhibit after Starr died (possibly to mid 1996?) but afterwards was home to the zoo's growing group of Eastern B&W Colobuses until sometime I think in 1999 when Robyn & Kayak the Nth WC Gibbons took it over (Kayak of course now long paired with Robyn's niece Nellie and living in a similar exhibit at Taronga).

I’m wondering if Ringo and Starr came from Adelaide Zoo. They imported 1.1 young Siamang in 1976 and then a further 3.3 Siamang in 1978. Breeding soon commenced, with a female named Iuri born in 1979 (among others); so it’s not hard to imagine they soon transferred some of the seven adults out to other zoos - with Adelaide retaining a single pair.

The Krefeld Zoo had a male Saimang named 'Ringo' who was wildborn in circa 1974. Fit's the description of Perth's male, especially if he was potentially imported by Adelaide in 1976
