Zoochat Challenge North America 2023

First zoo of the year and I've got quite the hefty haul! Missed the Children's Trail due to time constraints and my poor, starving phone battery, but I can get those simians later!

  1. Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx)
  2. Hamadryas Baboon (Papio hamadryas)
  3. Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)
  4. Buff-Cheeked Gibbon (Nomascus gabriellae)
  5. Red Ruffed Lemur (Varecia rubra)
  6. Common Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri sciureus)
  7. Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya)
  8. White-Faced Saki (Pithecia pithecia)
  9. Geoffroy's Spider Monkey (Ateles geoffroyi)
Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. Anyways, I can get at 5 more primates at Henry Vilas (6 if I'm lucky), maybe 2 more if I return to Phoenix, Wildlife World is a primate goldmine (if you can sift through all the repeats), but then I'm stuck. I want to visit the Chicago area during my spring break, and maybe San Diego during summer break, but those are gonna need some heavy planning. Milwaukee is another option, but I'm reluctant to visit. Anyways, good luck everyone!
Finally got to visit Henry Vilas (dang cold weather and homework...). Didn't see every primate they had, but I can get the ones I missed later!
Henry Vilas Zoo, February 5th, 2023
10. Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata)
11. Geoffrey's Marmoset (Callithrix geoffroyi)
12. White-Handed Gibbon (Hylobates lar)

Zoo Atlanta 2/8
Please join me in a moment of silence in memorium of my bucket list whom I have eviscerated these past two days. Zoo Atlanta lives up to the hype. It's brand-spanking new herp house ought to go down in the annals of zoo history of one of the best in modern history, chock full or rarites and spcecies I haven't heard of. Reptilandia Reptile Lagoon (Johnson City, TX) -- 10 February 2023:

A reptile zoo I was vaguely aware of, but have gotten little information about... if you have any general thoughts or photos it'd be great to hear more about it :)

Also a couple of housekeeping notes:

- I'm also going to count your North African Mastigure from Fort Worth as Sudan like @nczoofan did. It's interesting to hear that the signage and actual identity may not match up, but I want to keep listings for the same individual animals consistent - mainly to avoid confusion. I think going with the Sudan ID is better because it's what the signage says, and so others will likely count it as such. We'll do that for future cases as well... unless it's obviously a mistake, like a tegu signed as a gecko or something :p

- You and @nczoofan have both double-counted Grand Cayman Blue Iguana, so you should start your next update at #87 and #38 respectively.

It is a very well done little facility that I am very much looking forward to watching grow and expand! I was very impressed. I plan on at least sharing a species list and general impression soon. Unfortunately, not many of my photos turned out, as the viewing gallery is very dark.

As I had mentioned in a previous post, the Cyclura iguana on exhibit at Fort Worth is actually an Anegada rock iguana (C. pinguis) and not a Grand Cayman blue iguana (C. lewisi). The exhibit is labeled as "rock iguana (Cyclura spp)". I initially listed it as C. lewisi as @nczoofan had done, but I later cross referenced photos and checked ZIMS to confirm which species was on display because the iguana in question did not look like any Grand Cayman I had seen before.

That is fair enough, regarding the Uromastyx! I will alter my personal listing to reflect that decision.

Depending on what you decide re- the Fort Worth Cyclura...

Dallas World Aquarium (Dallas, TX) -- 11 February 2023:
87./88. Brown basilisk (Basiliscus vittatus)
88./89. Smooth helmeted basilisk (Corytophanes cristatus)

I missed that change in my scoresheet, thanks for reminding me. In that case I'll put you both down for Anegada Rock Iguana and Grand Cayman Blue Iguana, so the numbering will be correct for both of you.

87./88. Brown basilisk (Basiliscus vittatus)
88./89. Smooth helmeted basilisk (Corytophanes cristatus)

88 and 89 :)

I actually thought maybe you'd take the lead when I saw the Iguanaland heading, so I'm a little surprised you only ended up at 51 :p but in fairness they apparently have as many turtles as lizards, if not more.

@ThylacineAlive I have a couple of taxonomy notes:

32) Saban Black Iguana Iguana melanoderma

This is not recognized as a distinct species by the IUCN, so while a fascinating find I'm going to discount it.

23) Sulawesi Black Sailfin Lizard Hydrosaurus celebensis
47) Sulawesi Giant Sailfin Lizard Hydrosaurus microlophis

Can you clarify the taxonomic history here? These are not listed species by the IUCN but they are in the Reptile Database, was this a recent split from amboinensis?

When I visited the place exhibited ~170 species with ~90 of them being turtles/tortoises!

Fair enough on the iguana, would I count it as green iguana then? Interestingly, the Saban taxa, while seemingly not considered distinct by IUCN and ReptileDatabase, is still exempt from the Florida regulations banning the private keeping of green iguana taxa which does impact the St. Lucia taxa.

Hydrosaurus amboinensis was split a few years back I believe. Drastically different species on Sulawesi.

A visit to Little Rock yesterday brings me to an even 90! My goal is to hit 100 species before I move in the beginning of March. I have two tentative visits planned between now and then, so we will see if I make it!

Little Rock Zoo (Little Rock, AR) -- 17 February 2023:

An interesting aside for the herp thread you have in progress, @Coelacanth18, since my visit to Dallas last month, they have sent a group of their Sakishima grass lizards to Little Rock, which will be going on display soon. Their exhibit is ready and signed, but the lizards are not on exhibit yet.

Yeah that's awesome to know, thanks. Does Little Rock still have the Kuhl's Flying Geckos?

No you're good, welcome aboard :) your list looks good too, no notes.

It seems Texas and Florida are giving a few people sizable head starts in the first couple months! We'll see if results from the other regions start catching up in the spring though ;)

Saw two more species at the Central Park Zoo today!

Central Park Zoo, New York City, NY (1/27/23)
12. Japanese Macaque (Macaca fuscata)
13. Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata)

I just got back from a trip to DC, and I visited the Maryland Zoo, National Aquarium, and National Zoo while there! I had never visited the Maryland Zoo or National Aquarium before, and it was great to cross them off my bucket list. I really enjoyed both facilities, and I can see why the National Aquarium is consistently ranked so highly. The National Zoo was also great, with the Orangutans and Pygmy Slow Loris being two of the primate highlights. Here are all my updates:

Maryland Zoo in Baltimore (2/17/2023)

14. Red-Tailed Guenon (Cercopithecus ascanius)
15. Ring-Tailed Lemur (Lemur catta)
16. Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)

Smithsonian National Zoo (2/18/2023)
17. Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)
18. Allen's Swamp Monkey (Allenopithecus nigrovirdis)
19. Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla)
20. Red Ruffed Lemur (Varecia rubra)
21. Pygmy Slow Loris (Xanthonycticebus pygmaeus)
22. Emperor Tamarin (Saguinus imperator)

Four zoos and it's still January... this might be a record for me.

Buffalo Zoo:
6. Western Lowland Gorilla- Gorilla gorilla gorilla
7. Japanese Macaque- Macaca fuscata fuscata
8. Black-Capped Squirrel Monkey- Samiri boliviensis
9. Pale-Faced Saki- Pithecia pithecia
10. Brown Capuchin- Cebus apella
Rosamond Gifford Zoo:
11. Patas Monkey- Erythrocebus patas

Let's get this ball rolling!

Toronto Zoo: 21 January 2023
1. Guatemalan beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum (charlesbogerti))
2. Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum)
3. San Esteban chuckwalla (Sauromalus varius)
4. Desert grassland whiptail lizard (Aspidoscelis uniparens)
5. Black tree monitor (Varanus beccarii)
6. Central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps)
7. Fijian banded iguana (Brachylophus bulabula)
8. Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis)
9. Prehensile-tailed skink (Corucia zebrata)
10. Chinese crocodile lizard (Shinisaurus crocodiluris)
11. Veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus)
Found out Toronto actually keeps B.fasciatus and not B.bulabula. Total is still at 11.
