ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!

Question for @ThylacineAlive: what happens if a species loses its "bonafide rarity" status partway through the year? For this challenge, I used the semipalmated sandpiper at New England Aquarium, which was the only holder of it, but a species list posted in the zoo's news thread for the new bird house at Smithsonian National Zoo (opening next month) notes semipalmated sandpiper as one of the species that will be in the new exhibit. Can I still count the species as it was the only holder at the time of sighting, or will it be ineligible since another holder will start to keep the species by the end of the year?

I have this question too. Although given the IUCN challenge goes with what a species was when you saw it, I'd expect it to still count, but then this challenge is (in my opinion anyway) slightly different.

Again, you cannot list a species if you do not know the identity. Please include the scientific name for obscure or generically named species.

It retains the status as of when you saw it. If it's revealed that the species was always displayed elsewhere, then it no longer counts. I think if that gets revealed in the last quarter of the year or something and you saw the species at the beginning I'd let it slide.

May be obvious since I identified the species initially, but we will be treating this animal as identified above; Black-Tailed Hairy Dwarf Porcupine.

I will say the initial photo provided as proof which BnB responded to does look a lot like a weird NA Porcupine.

As I have already stated in the North American Challenge thread, unfortunately for this challenge/fortunately for the population, since my visit to the Dallas Zoo last month, the Dallas Zoo has sent a group of their Sakishima grass lizards to the Little Rock Zoo. They are currently still in quarantine and thus are not yet on exhibit; however, the exhibit is signed and ready for them to go on display soon. After which, Dallas will no longer be the only collection in North America with this species on display.

I made a little pit stop at the Abilene Zoo today on the first leg of westward trek! Apparently, the third time's the charm for the bobcat! They eluded me at both Fort Worth and Cameron Park.
