ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!

Question for @ThylacineAlive: what happens if a species loses its "bonafide rarity" status partway through the year? For this challenge, I used the semipalmated sandpiper at New England Aquarium, which was the only holder of it, but a species list posted in the zoo's news thread for the new bird house at Smithsonian National Zoo (opening next month) notes semipalmated sandpiper as one of the species that will be in the new exhibit. Can I still count the species as it was the only holder at the time of sighting, or will it be ineligible since another holder will start to keep the species by the end of the year?

To hopefully clear up the porcupine discussion a little bit, this animal has already been discussed today in the gallery. It is very obviously a Coendou species, and I can definitely find myself with the identification in the comments there that this would be a Black-tailed hairy dwarf porcupine, based on facial structure, pelage colouration and length of the back spines.
Thanks. That ID makes a lot more sense than Mexican Hairy Dwarf.

I have this question too. Although given the IUCN challenge goes with what a species was when you saw it, I'd expect it to still count, but then this challenge is (in my opinion anyway) slightly different.

3. That’s just what it was signed as. I’ll do some digging for specific species.

Again, you cannot list a species if you do not know the identity. Please include the scientific name for obscure or generically named species.

My brother in Christ do you not see the yellow on the top?
People really don’t have better things to do so they dispute a porcupine lol

Behave. Rude/unsportsmanlike comments are against game rules.

It retains the status as of when you saw it. If it's revealed that the species was always displayed elsewhere, then it no longer counts. I think if that gets revealed in the last quarter of the year or something and you saw the species at the beginning I'd let it slide.

May be obvious since I identified the species initially, but we will be treating this animal as identified above; Black-Tailed Hairy Dwarf Porcupine.

I will say the initial photo provided as proof which BnB responded to does look a lot like a weird NA Porcupine.

Toronto Zoo: 22 February 2023
Turns out Toronto's Fijian iguanas are B.fasciatus instead of B.bulabula. Also managed to ID the unknown Malagasy fish, both of which are actually very rare in North American zoos.

Toronto should have Rheocles vatosoa as well.

As I have already stated in the North American Challenge thread, unfortunately for this challenge/fortunately for the population, since my visit to the Dallas Zoo last month, the Dallas Zoo has sent a group of their Sakishima grass lizards to the Little Rock Zoo. They are currently still in quarantine and thus are not yet on exhibit; however, the exhibit is signed and ready for them to go on display soon. After which, Dallas will no longer be the only collection in North America with this species on display.

In looking through my spreadsheet to confirm that neither of the tortoises were a repeat, I discovered that I had missed a species of tortoise from my update from Reptilandia Reptile Lagoon (even though I included them in my species list from the facility ), so the above total is adjusted for the following:

Once again, I'll be able to see some of the species I missed when the weather warms up (Grizzlies, White Rhino, Capybaras, etc.), but until then, I've got a plan to visit some zoos out of state! March can't come soon enough...
Squeezed in a quick visit to Henry Vilas before my class on Tuesday. Only 3 new animals, but I'll take it!

Henry Vilas is runnin' a little thin. All they have left that's relevant for this challenge are the capybaras, the grizzlies, and a few turtles (unless any new species join their public collection this year). And even then, those wouldn't complete anything. However, that's all about to change... see you guys in a few weeks...

Moving forward, could you please make note in your updates the number of times you've seen the species for Embrace the ABCs and at which zoos you've seen them. Remember, all animals on the list must be seen at two separate zoos to complete the challenge. Thank you!

I made one last impromptu stroll through the zoo before I’m no longer a DFW local since it was such a nice day today!

Dallas Zoo (Dallas, TX) -- 28 February 2023:

See, Don’t Touch (19/∞):
  1. Black-legged poison dart frog (Phyllobates bicolor)

    2. Burmese star tortoise (Geochelone platynota)
TOTAL:
Completed: 16/29
In-Progress: 8/10

In looking through my spreadsheet to confirm that neither of the tortoises were a repeat, I discovered that I had missed a species of tortoise from my update from Reptilandia Reptile Lagoon (even though I included them in my species list from the facility ), so the above total is adjusted for the following:

  1. Turtles/Tortoises (55/∞):

I made a little pit stop at the Abilene Zoo today on the first leg of westward trek! Apparently, the third time's the charm for the bobcat! They eluded me at both Fort Worth and Cameron Park.

    1. Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris)
