Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2023

Generally speaking, you are right. But some of these projects are scheduled much earlier than that:

AFRICA
- Savannah exhibit and Giraffe Trail: early 2023
- Elephant Complex: 2024 (delayed: no earlier than 2025)
- Lions: 2024-2026
- Rhinos + Gerenuks: 2026-2028
- Desert Exhibit: 2028-2030

ASIA
- Otters, Barbirusas, Black Crested Macaques: end of 2023
- Extension for Sumatran Tigers: ?

NORTH AMERICA:
- Polar Bears and Sea Lions: ?

AVIARY: ?

FARM: ?

SCIENCE CENTER: ?

When the Savannah is finished, a number of animals will move and create some free space anyways. So let's see how they go about everything...

Is there still a plan to built a South America hall. Will that be the last Pieter pf the masterplan ?

In the 2015 Masterplan Cape buffalo are mentioned in a mixed species concept with giraffes, grèvy zebra and some antelopes.

I am afraid, I kind of doubt this is still their plan. The buffalos haven't been mentioned for some time now and they probably wouldn't be implied by the term "antilopes". Having said that, the lions and rhinos also haven't been mentioned for many months and they seem to be back in the game now. The Tierpark (staff) also seems to be reluctant about giving up real ge So I still won't give up hope.

Is there still a plan to built a South America hall. Will that be the last part of the masterplan?

The short but probably still best answer is: We really don't know apart from the fact it isn't even mentioned for the 2035 time frame. However, my gut feeling tells me there likely won't be an Amazon(as) building for many, many years and some of us probably will never see one become reality. And I also don't really believe in the giant aviary before I see them starting construction. Besides the already running projects (some of them being expensive ones as well) they will also need to improve a lot of existing exhibits and complexes (e.g. bird aviaries).

Speaking of which, the lemur islands in front of the lemur forest are being overdone at the moment. Apparently, they want to merge the two islands into a larger one giving the lemurs some more (connected) ground space. In addition, they also plan a much bigger and higher climbing construction (probably similar to the tree kangaroos or the new world porcupines/ursons).

And some more fresh news: The newly arrived Forester Kangaroos already present their first offspring:

And the Palawan Peacock-Pheasants have a chick (the other didn't make it).

In case someone's not familiar with this beautiful species (I didn't know them before their arrival in Berlin): This is what the male specimen look like:

On a Facebook group for Berlin's zoos, I spotted a first dinosaur. Some sort of pterosaur has taken up residence at the pond near the peccaries. At least in the photo, this giant lizard doesn't particularly appeal to me. I hope it looks a bit more real and impressive in real size and three dimensions.

Oh, before I forget: According to another comment, a second prehistoric giant has already popped up next to the bison. I guess some more are to follow soon.

Can it be confirmed that they are not still insisting on proof of Covid-19 vaccination or proof of recovery from Covid-19 within the previous six months in order to permit entry? I haven’t visited since 2020 because of this, but I would very much like to return.

I believe not. Should be on the website if so.

Been there a month ago and can confirm that they don't require certificates anymore.

I recall on my 2022 visit in the Summer no such thing was needed then.

You can always look for current restrictions on this page:

Specific information about Covid related restrictions are listed on a separate page:

In short: You still need to wear a mask in the lemur forest as you may have direct contact to the primates. You also still need to wear a mask on the train, if this is actually still correct (I don't remember people wearing masks on there, but I may not have paid enough attention). Other than that everything is back to normal.

Thank you very much to all who confirmed this. I did look on the website, but couldn’t seem to find anything anywhere on the main page, or in the news articles. I remember previously the rules were always posted very explicitly. I didn’t want to assume that the absence of any announcement meant the absence of rules. I’ll go ahead and plan my long awaited revisit!

Fantastic species would definitely be good to hear of any plans to display them. Does anyone have recent photos of the savannah progress?

I am a bit surprised: According to Zootierliste, the park received 1,1 lowland anoas from Chester. Actually, I never heard anything about plans with this species. They did have plans for bantengs, though. So either they changed their plans or they are going to have both (if the animals aren't going to be moved to Berlin Zoo or elsewhere).

Wasn't there something about Black crested macaques, Babirusas and Anoas ? Or was it Wild buffaloes ?

I'm curious if these were the anoas held in the cattle house before the demolition of that enclosure late last year.
