I know, I meant 13 elephants total between 2022 and 2023 including both Asian and African elephants. 5 Asian & 3 African have been born between the 2 years so far with 5 more African on the way this year.

If so, it's likely Nadirah will give birth sometime in the first half of next year.
The females at Dallas are also additional chances for the other 3.
Litsemba at Reid Park was also reported 'mating' with Mabu last February, so going from Reid Park's history in announcing pregnancies we should receive an announcement soon if she is indeed pregnant.
And don't forget Mbali and Matjeka at Tampa, who have mated with Sduldha (at least as far back as 2021).
It's likely there's only another two or three Africans due this year (including Jayei). Others are all due early next year.
there’s a total number of 4 African Elephants minimum aside from Jayei that are due in 2023. Omaha zoos former director Dennis Pate confirmed this in an article that between 2022 and 2023 Omaha will represent half of the elephant births born in the United States. He also said they are six African Elephants due with calves this year.

This is some very wonderful news! Zahara is quite the genetically valuable young cow so I’m very glad she will be having a calf. She will also be the first captive born African elephant cow in the US to give birth since Asali at Memphis (10+ years ago) iirc - which is a really big deal considering how few captive bred cows have bred thus far. Unless Nadirah beats her to it that is!
It is interesting that the calf was conceived via artificial insemination considering Indy’s bull Kedar is completely unrelated to Zahara, it makes me wonder if he’s a behavioral non-breeder which would be unfortunate but it would make sense considering his upbringing.

This is 1 of the African elephant births that Omaha was probably referring to. Now I wonder who the other 3 will be? We have Jayei; Zahara, and three that still remain unannounced that have calves due this year.
It’s very likely that was one of the six pregnancies Omaha was referring to but further speculation on these elephant pregnancies should go in the North American Asian and African Elephant speculation thread.

I imagine the zoo will give us confirmation as to who the father is most likely. That being said, I sincerely hope it isn’t Jackson. He already has SO many offspring, has two grandkids alone on the way and we don’t need more of his genetics within the population.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they just pulled semen from Kedar. Would probably be the cheapest option for them as well.
Other potential and likely options would be Jackson of course, Bulwagi, Junnot, and Maclean. Those four are all fertile, and have extensive histories of having semen collected for AI. It wouldn’t be Ali or Ajani to be certain.

Dale and Tamani of KC are also options.
They’ve been training to collect from Tamani since at least 2019 and have frozen sperm from Dale that they were using for AI when fresh sperm wasn’t available. Funnily enough before COVID an AI at Indianapolis with sperm from Dale had to be canceled because the cow’s cycle timing wasn’t ideal. Kansas City have been seeming to take over the African elephant assisted reproduction program recently. Big thanks should really be going to Dr. Morefeld for her work too.

Huh, very interesting news, especially regarding Dale! That would honestly be the most ideal, a pregnancy through Dales preserved semen.
Ultimately only time will tell, but knowing how things are, it’ll probably be a Jackson calf :/ To be fair he *is* a good looking bull, and tends to throw female offspring, but still, he is the most well represented African Elephant in North America. We need variety darnit!
I don’t think the father is Jackson in my opinion. The zoo already has Kedar and I personally see that in this case the most likely father of this calf anyway.

I personally don't think Kedar's the father. Just a thought, but if he was in fact the father, surely Indianapolis would've announced it too. Kedar was also conceived via AI, so surely this calf would also be celebrated as the first calf born to two parents born via the same procedure, rather than just one as mentioned.
that’s a good point actually. Either way, no telling without knowing until Indianapolis confirms the fathers identity.

that’s actually really surprising about both. I’m hoping it’s titan as I don’t think he’s ever had a calf. Glad to know it is NOT Jackson hopefully.
