North American Asian and African Elephant Populations: Discussion and Speculation

Again though, we don’t know how nor which females got pregnant other than Zahara and Jayei. We don’t know the father for all of them is Callee or not. As for Ali I was just using him as an example as a genetically valuable bull that hasn’t been used for breeding more when he should be.

Should be an exciting year then. Announcements, births ect. still to come. :)

theres 4 additional calves due this year (Jayei, Zahara, and 2 unknown) and 2 due next year (Renee and Nadirah) minimum.
Might be good to keep an eye on the girls at Sedgewick and Tampa going forward.;) They're the strongest chance for the other two pregnancies imo.

I’m starting to wonder more with Batir if she’s pregnant or not as well. Sometimes I’ve noticed whenever a zoo moves a bull the birth of an elephant shortly follows afterward. It makes me wonder if Artie being moved to TES was to make way for a potential calf. I guess it’s sort of a gut feeling I have to and while realistically the chances of that are 0 to none, it’s a waiting game from here.

That's not necessarily the case. I tend to find it, the opposite. The zoo tends to move a bull when there's a lack of breeding, and end up obtaining a new one.

Since Batir's 21, she's pushing the limits. Hopefully she is pregnant.

but there are examples of this. Bowie an Asian elephant was moved in November 2022 from the Fort Worth Zoo to the Oklahoma City Zoo. Flash forward 3 months later and Belle had her first calf. Mabu usually when he’s moved he’s usually gotten a female pregnant prior to his transfer. Again I do find it very unlikely Batir is pregnant but you never know. And Louie could’ve potentially learned something from Callee at Omaha too, he would’ve been around for the matings of Claire, Kiki and Lolly.

Call me crazy but I could have sworn I saw some breast development on Ivory in this video

I mean Nyah was born ten years ago… And it’d make sense for them to try and breed from her as she and Zahara are the only options for the herd’s future after Nyah and Kalina’s deaths.

Honestly I was surprised when it was revealed Zahara was pregnant and not Ivory.

I feel like though Indianapolis would’ve announced Ivory’s pregnancy like they just did with her daughter Zahara in my opinion. Maybe she’s not far enough along yet that the zoo feels comfortable in announcing her pregnancy…?

I believe that would be the case if she is pregnant

If she is pregnant that’d be great news for the elephant population. We need every cow breeding that we can get. Speaking of cows breeding, an updated version on African Elephant Pregnancies.

Breast development usually begins to occur much later in pregnancy (at least after the first year). So considering Zahara’s due in October (7 months away), I think Ivory would be due around the same time, or maybe a little later. If so, it would make sense for the zoo to announce both, so I’m not entirely sure.

In some cases, females do have much larger and noticeable breasts despite them not being pregnant.

That’s true, the way I see they’re either just waiting to announce at 15 months again or considering she’s had 3 calves they may just be more obvious due to wear and tear.

Yes older and more experienced females tend to have more noticeable breasts, so that may very well be the case.

Also it’s important to remember that she is an older female (now 41) and hasn’t given birth in more than a decade. The chances of her being pregnant are thus, quite low.

I have noticed that as well the older a female is and the more calves she's had the larger her breasts are, and if Ivory is indeed pregnant then she may be in the early stages of her pregnancy if she is pregnant.

Well, if I learned anything about all of this is that even with all of this speculating and theories we have we don’t know for sure. Everybody thought Renee would never have a calf again after Lucas, that didn’t age well in a good way. AND Renee is older than Ivory.

That’s possible. We can only hope she is in the early stages of pregnancy. It would have to be through AI though; like Zahara’s calf.

Renee’s only two years older than Ivory, so not that much older.

Her pregnancy also made sense as Toledo would be looking to build their herd; and so would probably be hoping for a female here to carry on Renee’s line at Toledo.

Not what I heard. Fellow zoochat member @PSO said it was highly unlikely shortly after Lucas died that Toledo would ever have another calf and now nearly 2 years later after Lucas death Renee is pregnant. My point is that we don’t always know everything nor is it our business too.
