Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park Santa Ana Zoo News

This Friday January 14th the Groundbreaking will begin for the new Amazons Edge Renovation.
The exhibit will include Giant River Otters and unannounced but pictured spider monkeys and howler monkeys. More on the renovation will be announced Friday.

Amazon's Edge was built in 1993, the year after I was born, so it is fascinating to see this exhibit I grew up visiting on a frequent basis change to the extent that it will. As I have shared on here before, my dad lived in Santa Ana and taught ESL (English as a second language) at Santa Ana College, so I used to visit the Santa Ana Zoo a lot and attended zoo camps there.

Also according to the master plan the spider monkey exhibit will include titi and white-faced saki monkeys. There will be 4 primate exhibits, 2 for howler and 2 for the spider/titi/saki monkeys. The exhibit concept from the master plan:

I don’t know if the caiman exhibit nearby will also be built with the Amazon complex. From a construction standpoint it makes sense to do it sooner than later but the zoo could be trying to keep down the budget of this exhibit. What it looks like to me is that they want to start with this exhibit for publicity to bring more people into the zoo and to fuel the rest of the master plan. Glad to see them really kick this master plan into action.

Creating immersive new experiences at Santa Ana Zoo

The California zoo has begun work on a $70 million master plan, reimagining a number of habitats

Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park in California has been a rich resource for its community for over 70 years. Owned and operated by the City of Santa Ana, and with additional support from the non-profit entity, Friends of Santa Ana Zoo, the zoo averages 240,000 annual visitors.

The zoo opened in 1952; over the past seven decades, a visit to the Santa Ana Zoo has become an essential part of every childhood in the region. During this time, the zoo has evolved from being predominantly a place of recreation to one of education, conservation, and inspiration. With each visit, people leave not just with a better understanding of the complexity and interdependence of nature and the extraordinary diversity of life but are also inspired to find ways of making the world more environmentally harmonious.
