ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!

Please understand that what I said was not an accusatory claim, but rather one of a friendly nature. I understand that what Kudu saw on his excursion across the country is completely valid, and I am not one to dispute that! It is simply after all friendly banter in a friendly competition. Please understand that I am only being friendly about a friendly competition, no more, no less!

This isn't the place for that. You made the claim with no hint of joking, about someone you don't know at all.

This isn't the place for that. You made the claim with no hint of joking, about someone you don't know at all.

...and when Leaf himself has repeatedly tried to sneak taxa such as Azure Poison Frog which are invalid for the purposes of the challenge into his list, even after being asked several times to desist :p

You did complete One-Zoo Wonder by completing Don't Turn On the Lights at DWA. You should be at 8 completed challenges.

You did complete One-Zoo Wonder by completing Don't Turn On the Lights at DWA. You should be at 8 completed challenges.

I did complete that one at DWA. I just was unsure of what counted for the nocturnal challenge and therefore, wanted to use a safer option for my one-zoo wonder. I believe my count is seven though as @amur leopard stated.

Well, would you look at the time? It's a few weeks o'clock! Zochatters, behold my master plan! I wanted to do something special for my spring break this year, so at the beginning of the year, I asked my dear friend @ifesbob if we could do a road trip to Chicago, and after months of planning, it's finally happening! Yesterday was the big drive to Illinois, and today we went to the Lincoln Park Zoo! Now, there will definitely be some differences between my list and @ifesbob's list. I admittedly forgot that some species counted, and forgot to look for them. Nevertheless, here's what I saw today!

Certainly impressive to have finished so many this early!
The DFW area is really a gold mine for zoological institutions. There are so many facilities with really solid and unique collections within a day’s drive of the metroplex… And then following that up with a move to the West Coast… I have been extremely fortunate with where my work has taken me :p

Technically, one long weekend would be enough to achieve both those species in Virginia and National Zoos, if you have the ability to travel and/or are determined to finish all of the challenges.
@TinoPup assures me that that is the case :D
:p And I am definitely considering it — both to visit her and because it will bother me to be so close to finishing, haha. We’ll just have to see how the year unfolds. Moving across the country ate up a lot of potential travel funds.

It's interesting how different regions change what we consider the most difficult challenges/species to achieve. For me, the species I consider the limiting factor in "Unbearable Challenge" is the Sun Bear, a species I've never seen before, and Asiatic Black Bear is a species that I'm more likely than not to see before the year's out.
The regional breakdown is certainly a very interesting component of this challenge format that I’ve enjoyed observing both in this challenge and last year’s North American challenge. In Texas, tapirs are only found in the farthest extremes of El Paso and Houston, and there are only three species of bears at accredited facilities in the state, with the vast majority of facilities only holding American black. It is interestingly the exact opposite for me, I have never seen an Asiatic black bear, but will visit at least three different holders of sun bear this year and visited two different holders last year.

I think the only chance for anyone else is to beat you on the unlimited challenges :p
:p

That’ll at least be easy for someone to do with the Marsupials/Monotremes challenge! Our collection in North America is abysmal.

I reckon the main stumbling point for European competitors will be cetaceans....

Perhaps, though that is only one of five unlimited challenges in fairness. I'd expect the North Americans to do better on average with the poison dart frogs, penguins and potentially also bovids depending on the collections visited (SDZSP probably being the best bovid collection in the world) while Europe probably have the edge in Marsupials and testudines. If anyone else comes close to finishing I doubt they will be able to beat your counts in a few of those unlimited challenges anyway, with SD SeaWorld soon to rocket your penguin score skywards :p.

Probably that and the How Many Toes challenge given the scarcity of Baird's over here. Hall of Champions isn't exactly straightforward either :P.

Hall of Champions isn't straightforward no matter where someone is from. I'm only aware of one U.S. holder of the umbrellabird, for instance, which conveniently for @Kudu21 is Dallas World Aquarium.

Even in the US, cetaceans aren't exactly widespread. If someone is planning a trip to Florida or visit SeaWorld San Diego, Shedd Aquarium, or Georgia Aquarium, then they'll have an easy time with cetaceans, however for much of the U.S. there are few, if any, facilities keeping cetaceans. It might be slightly easier here than in Europe, but that's a challenge that I reckon is difficult across much of the world.

Feels good to finally have a non-rushed Shedd Aquarium experience!

Turtles... so many turtles... but I completed Sea Shepherds, and that's what really matters! My master plan continues tomorrow! The Brookfield Zoo won't even know what hit 'em...
You know, whenever I think about clearing a bunch of challenges, I always hear the sound of a bunch of bowling pins getting knocked down. Anyways, Brookfield. Got there around 10:00, left at around 4:30. While there were some unfortunate misses (anteater, meerkats, gorillas), I can confidently say that this was my best trip to Brookfield yet!

Boy, do I have a story to tell about Bona Fide Rarity Hunter! @ifesbob and I missed the pangolin on our first go through Habitat Africa: the Forest. We decided to catch it on the way out, but we didn't see it there, either. We were about to give up... then the bucket in the habitat breathed. The pangolin was asleep in the bucket, but we couldn't see them. What did we do? The only sensible thing anyone would do: stare at a bucket of paper shavings in the dark for 45 minutes until the pangolin woke up, of course! We waited until the buildings were about to close, and then... the pangolin woke up! They even stuck out their tongue!
Anyways, I'm exhausted. I've got to get up early tomorrow for the ride back to Madison...
...but not without two more zoo visits on the way! Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!
