San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park News 2023

Dumai, a 10 YO male Sumatran tiger went on display for the first time last week. He came from the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, WA with the expressed purpose of breeding with Diana and/or Jillian.
Dumai’s actually from Wildlife Safari. He was born at Point Defiance. ;)

Some updates from my visit this past Monday:
  • Most of the birds seem to be back on display, with the exception of the flamingos and macaws. The walkthrough aviary across from the Hidden Jungle is still closed, and one of the mesh aviaries in the area of Mombassa Lagoon is also empty.
  • The viewing for the cassowaries and tree kangaroos is currently closed off.
  • The park has gone out of Bennett’s wallabies.
  • The sand cat exhibit is still closed for renovations.
  • The small yard in front of the former dwarf mongoose exhibit is now signed for bat-eared fox, and it appears to be connected to the dwarf mongoose exhibit via a door in the back. That exhibit is no longer signed for anything.
  • The park has also gone out of greater kudu, sending out the last of the bachelor herd recently.

A couple more updates from this week:
  • The flamingos around Mombasa Lagoon and along the tram are back on exhibit, as are the vultures along the tram and the cockatoo next to the coffee stand in the village. It seems like it’s just the one aviary I mentioned previously, the vulture exhibit along the African Outpost trail, and the macaws at the entrance that are still off exhibit.
  • The tree kangaroo and cassowary viewing has reopened.
  • The bat-eared foxes have, indeed, taken over the former dwarf mongoose exhibit as well as the adjoining yard.
  • There are multiple newly born Nile lechwe calves in the East Africa habitat currently.
  • If you want to see the Barbary deer, I highly suggest you make an effort to visit San Diego as soon as possible. The park is down to three individuals, and they are all showing their age. They will not be around for much longer.

Thanks for sharing. Has there been any movement on thr Elephant Valley construction as of yet?

Following up Julio's post, I visited in late February. There is a construction fence around a big chunk of the area around the elephants, including the former viewing areas. The temporary elephant viewing area is now a narrow zone adjacent to the herb garden; you have to access the viewing area through the herb garden.

As Julio reported, the footprint of the monorail between the elephant exhibits was bulldozed, and it looked like the former Asian elephant area was being bulldozed also.

Since construction started in mid-September, I've been there 2-3 times a week. Construction has been constant, but the record-breaking rainfall we've experienced this season has affected the construction. I thought that we were done for the season with the rain that we had last Wednesday, but the forecast calls for more rain on Wednesday & Thursday. Once things dry out, I'm sure that they'll be back at it again in full force.

Dumai’s actually from Wildlife Safari. He was born at Point Defiance. ;)

At the time I posted, word was that Dumai had come from Port Defiance. After doing a deep dive on Dumai after that, I learned that he was born on 8/22/2012 at Port Defiance. He was a single cub and his mother abandoned him at birth. Less than 2 months later, Berani, a Malayan tiger, was born at the Tulsa Zoo, and was also a single cub abandoned by his mother. When he was 6 weeks old, Berani was brought to Port Defiance and the two tiger cubs were raised together as brothers, and were known as "The Tiger Brothers". In January 2019, when Dumai was 7, the two were separated, with Dumai going to the Wilderness Safari in Oregon, where he sired 4 cubs, before coming to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park last month.

The former large vulture habitat in African Outpost by the warthogs is now home to ground hornbills. The vultures are all in the Bird Marsh habitat along the tram. The small vulture habitat by the addax/addra gazelle habitat still holds hooded and Egyptian vultures.

The white-lipped deer are now all gone, and their hillside habitat is now empty.

The male Malayan sambar have moved into the Nubian ibex/Mandarin sika exhibit. The Mandarin sika is now a little difficult to pick out from the sambar while still in his winter coat.

The two male Przewalski’s horses have moved into the Central Asia field exhibit.

More animals have returned to exhibit!

The hyacinth macaw is back on exhibit at the entrance.

A sand cat is back on exhibit in Nairobi Village.

The desert tortoises are back on exhibit with the burrowing owls in Condor Ridge.

A pair of saddlebill storks is back on exhibit next to the greater flamingo habitat.

A male lowland nyala is now on exhibit in the East Africa habitat.

Great thanks! A shame they do not wish to breed them, that is odd to me. Regardless, that's excellent thank you for the information.
