From Facebook: Basle - female Sumatran, Revital, died on 31 January, four days after giving birth. She was very tired after the birth and scarcely eating and drinking. The baby was euthanased.
I guess the baby was male and they didnt want to handraise it. I am pretty sure that it would have very good chances of survival of handraised, but that takes a lot of work for the keepers and can cause a lot of problems with socialsation later in life for the animal. And the there is a big surplus of male orang utans. I guess it was a practical decision to not try and save it.
That seems the new strategy of serveral great ape EEPs to euthanize babys that otherwise needed handraising; the same was done with a gorilla baby in Munich recently. Even though that baby was female. But the Gorilla EEP also has a surplus problem (with both males and females)….
The baby, a male, was actually born on 23 December 2022.Zoo La Boissiere Du Dore - @Panthera9 has reported a birth on the zoo's thread, Jaya x Becky. All part of life's rich tapestry.
The father of the new baby is 'Sabas', Ejde's sonFrom Rostock's FB page today: Cantik gave birth to a baby girl 'a few days ago'. Presumably the father is Ejde?
They have a lot of breeding success at Rostock.
Thanks. The baby was born on 16 March. The father of the new baby is 'Sabas', Ejde's son
Does Kristiansand still have Bornean Orangutans Nony, Matu, and Durian?Recently 10-year old female Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) Mimpi was send from Zoo Zürich to Kristiansand Dyreparken (Norway) to start a new breeding group. 10-year old male Dwi arrived from Amneville zoo to accompany her. This makes Kristiansand Dyreparken a new holder for this species!
