I think the suggestion is that the baby was already very weakened from malnutrition(?) etc. but perhaps its a little strange no attempt to resuscitate or handrear it was made. Perhaps it was already moribund... There's also an online comment in relation to this that Silvestre from Monkeyworld has 'not been accepted' by the females he's with and has lost a lot of weight. I would attribute this perhaps more to depression induced from his transfer of homes, which Orangutans (and in particular some youngish males) can sometimes suffer quite seriously from. Hopefully he will pick up again and also establish himself with his new partner(15) and her daughter (4).

I guess the baby was male and they didnt want to handraise it. I am pretty sure that it would have very good chances of survival of handraised, but that takes a lot of work for the keepers and can cause a lot of problems with socialsation later in life for the animal. And the there is a big surplus of male orang utans. I guess it was a practical decision to not try and save it.

That seems the new strategy of serveral great ape EEPs to euthanize babys that otherwise needed handraising; the same was done with a gorilla baby in Munich recently. Even though that baby was female. But the Gorilla EEP also has a surplus problem (with both males and females)….

I have a note that Revital previously gave birth on 23 November 2020 but the baby died the next day.

This occurred to me also...the recent Munich baby gorilla they said was beyond saving but I do wonder...though being female it would have been more valuable and could have been surrogated later on no doubt, as is the trend nowadays.

Recently 10-year old female Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) Mimpi was send from Zoo Zürich to Kristiansand Dyreparken (Norway) to start a new breeding group. 10-year old male Dwi arrived from Amneville zoo to accompany her. This makes Kristiansand Dyreparken a new holder for this species!
