Cheetahs in Iran

Wasn't the population then already tiny? I don't see why they'd split up an already tiny population across two places, when the ones in Iran didn't even do well (I'm assuming that, considering how there's now only 12 left, with an almost certainly unviable gene pool, considering the sex ratio is 3:1)

Fair points, I just thought maybe it could create certain safeguards. What are people's thoughts of allowing the interbreeding of Asiatic cheetahs with another subspecies to help boost their population? Similar to what was done with Amur leopards and American bison.

Horrible news. This and the vaquita is extinction happening in real time, and it’s most likely too little too late. We as a species could’ve and should’ve prevented this from happening.

I agree, this absolutely could have been avoided! Unfortunately, we seem to be at an irreversible point of no return.

The proposed reintroduction of Cheetahs to India is discussed in this thread: Reintroduction of the Cheetah to India
Given the relative diffuse evidence on carnivore conservation in India, cheetah seem the last of their priorities. Project Tiger, Gir Forest lion controversy. Why another controversy and a political ploy rather than a true conservation project.

The administration does not go beyond we want to have ... instead of whether there is a rationale and validity to the project at all.

BTW: I am not sure on the quote of just 9 cheetahs in Iran, I continue to hear a figure of less than 40 in the country (down from 100+ ...). Certainly, not looking good.

The latest is 2 breeding females in Touran with cubs. And this is just a very small portion of their range that was identified earlier.

A female asiatic cheetah named 'Iran' gave birth to 3 cubs in captivity a few weeks ago. Unfortunately 2 of them died, so only 1 cub remains. The cub is being hand-raised because the mother rejected it.

The facility is apparently the 'Turan cheetah breeding center'.

There are regular updates on the cub at @alirezashahrdari on Instagram, but I don't understand them since I don't speak Farsi.

Sure, but it wasn't anywhere near as small as it is now.

From information I gathered through Instagram, the third cheetah cub (named Firouz) died a few weeks ago, apparently due to a medical error. It had been transferred to a facility in Tehran. His death caused huge emotion on Iranian social media.
