Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium News 2023

The zoo is up for AZA accreditation this spring/summer for the hearing in September.

This should be interesting. Has the zoo made significant changes to their elephant practices since forfeiting their accreditation in 2015? Not to mention a good chunk of their exhibits really fell off since then.

Tropical Forest SERIOUSLY aged like milk. (And judging by a certain shade of yellow the glass roof has now, you could say that quite literally).

I didn't visit last year, but in 2021 they still had big signs up in the elephant building about how they use free contact.

They’re in the path to accreditation program. So far program members are 2/2 in getting accreditation when they apply, but if Pittsburgh is unwilling to budge on the thing that got them kicked out… we’ll see.

It's worth noting when discussing the upcoming AZA accreditation process, Dr. Jeremy Goodman, the new director of Pittsburgh Zoo, was a former member of the AZA's accreditation commission and was the director of Turtle Back when it first got accredited. He knows his way around this process, and I doubt he'd apply for Pittsburgh to get accreditation if he wasn't confident that they meet all the requirements and have a decent chance.

So happy for Semba! I remember her birth and watched her grow up during my time in Pittsburgh. Super interesting though that the zoo is not currently listed at all in the Amur Leopard SSP.

That's probably because they aren't currently accredited by the AZA. Hopefully they'll at least be included as "Sustainability Partners" in future SSPs if they don't regain their AZA accreditation.

I am planning a visit in July and was wondering if anyone have a current species list they would be willing to share.

When did Pittsburgh get tomistoma? I know they had gharial not too long ago
