Thanks @Zooish for your detailed updates and 16 photos of Bird Paradise in the ZooChat gallery. This brand-new park looks absolutely spectacular, with huge walk-through aviaries and an impressive bird collection. I really do need to get over to Singapore at some point in my life...a true bucket list destination considering I've visited zoos in many other nations.

On a side note, when I visited Walsrode in 2019 I typed up an extensive review on this site and I loved my time there. However, I wrote about how that legendary bird zoo was missing a 'wow' moment as almost every single aviary was of an average size, or even a bit tight on space. Bird Paradise is the opposite, with massive enclosures for the birds. I understand that for breeding purposes, quite often smaller, single-species aviaries work best, but in terms of visitor appreciation it would appear that Bird Paradise would be unparalleled. It will be interesting to see the visitor attendance numbers in the future, once all the construction is done at the various Mandai Wildlife Reserve parks.

You're most welcome. Species which they have specific breeding plans for are kept in smaller, single-species aviaries at the back of house. But yes, the walk-in aviaries are designed to wow.

An in-depth 40 minute tour of the new park was recently uploaded. It all looks amazing, which shouldn't be surprising. I'd be curious to hear from @Zooish what his thoughts are when comparing 'Bird Paradise' to old Jurong. I understand the park was beloved by many, but shoebills and macaws in massive free-flight aviaries are already enough to sell me on its replacement. :D

The aviaries are very impressive, thanks for the species list and first pictures! I do wonder about the compatibility of some species though, both in terms of agressiveness and potential hybridization...

I sat and watched the entire 40-minute video and I must say it all looks quite amazing. To be able to open a brand-new zoo in 2023, with all the previous knowledge that Jurong's staff accumulated over the years, is breathtaking. Some folks adore Walsrode's rows of aviaries with the birds in clear sight, but for me there is not a single exhibit there that looks half as good as what is in that Bird Paradise video. There is clearly a 'wow' factor in Singapore.

Besides the 8 walk-through aviaries, the visitor amenities also appear to be superb. That 'ice cool' darkened restaurant in Penguin Cove, the Treetop Play zone with kid-friendly climbing structures that look like mini aviaries, the Egg Splash water play area, the covered Sky Amphitheatre (with flocks of pelicans and flamingos in the show!) and wide, family-friendly pathways everywhere. I'm not even a "twitcher" and yet I'm excited to visit this zoo one day.

Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, Bird Paradise and Rainforest Wild (2024) make Singapore a zoo nerd's paradise all in one location. Oh yeah, there's also the S.E.A. Aquarium a half hour down the road, which is one of the largest aquariums ever built in terms of gallons of water.

The walk in aviaries were always a favourite part of Jurong so this new facility is really quite incredible. To be able to see species that were previously housed in much smaller avairies in Jurong flying in large spaces was a highlight for me, especially the various parrot species. The downside is that it will be difficult to spot some of the smaller and shy species, especially if there are fewer specimens. Having mainly walk in aviaries limits the variety of species that can be displayed, but that is somewhat mitigated by the soon to open Winged Sanctuary zone with convential aviaries. The mesh used here is also much finer, so it should make for better viewing and photography.

Asking because I’m not looking at photos or videos to avoid ‘spoilers’. How is the vegetation going? Is there much growing-in required or is it already nice and dense?

Aggression seems to be managed well as the aviaries are large enough to give each bird their own space. Hybridization might be a problem with the lorikeets, but even at Jurong that issue was not significant. I think a bigger concern is with the parrots getting too close to visitors and biting them, especially the cockatoos that were hand raised.

It doesn't look naked, but there isn't much shade at the moment as the newly planted trees haven't fully grown out. But thankfully a number of existing trees on the site have been retained. Heart of Africa especially looks like a mature forest already.

Collection is amazing and that's without winged sanctuary for now. And there's not too long left till opening, really can't wait to go there :)

Can someone provide me with some information or rainforest wild? Of course I don’t want to clog up this thread. Must say the facility is looking amazing

Not much information is available currently. Mandai Wildlife Group will probably share more in the latter part of this year. For now the attention is on Bird Paradise.

Where are the pelicans supposed to be housed? Or will they just pop up at the show?
This place looks amazing!
