Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo News 2023

@Gavial That's interesting. It again clarifies they are not going to have bears and wolves share the space. And it states another motivation behind the return of brown bears: They want so raise awareness (and acceptance?) for this species which used to live in our region.

What happened to the polar wolves? I haven’t been since 2019 and I might be out of the loop; I didn’t realise anything had happened to them

Elephant Pang Pha learned herself how to peel off a banana. Apparently she only does this with yellow bananas with brown spots. She eats yellow bananas without peeling them off, and she doesn't eat brown bananas. Researchers think she learned it while copying her keepers since she was hand raised. She didn't teach the trick to her daughter.

In the article is an interesting movie about the action.

From my understanding, I believe Berlin currently have no Amur tigers in their collection currently. I believe the last male, Darius died in the last year, I did not see any during my visit earlier this year and signage was up to explain this.

And much like my posting for the Tierpark, does any known the current Gerenuk population for the zoo?

I also have a question but regarding developments - when will the new big cat exhibits be complete? There's an indication in the masterplan that construction has already started but I'd be interested to know when one could expect them to be completed? Is it essentially the next (or final?) phase on the Felid building?

Construction has started. I’d reckon it’s a year or two away from completion.
