Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoological Park 2023

I recall regarding Blesboks that their field is only visible from one particular angle, which seemingly didn't provide very close view somehow? Perhaps it is that Blesboks are secretive animals.
But good to hear about the calf - Marwell seem to be working up a nice social unit. Hopefully other antelope can follow suit - their sitatunga also seem very well, especially after a several-year 'stagnation'.

News updates

Celebrating recent updates at the zoo - Marwell Zoo

Key points
  • The ban on animal movement in and out of Marwell due to the avian flu outbreak has been lifted.
  • The caracara will be going on show at the end of the month. The species has also been confirmed as crested caracara.
  • A female bokiboky has arrived.

Interesting that there's absolutely no mention of the Thriving Through Nature exhibit? Wonder if its been delayed.

Thriving through nature was always advertised as coming this summer. It isn’t summer yet. The lack of news about the bush dogs was more noticeable in my opinion.

I saw in the post that the caracara was referred to with 'they' and 'their'. I am not sure whether this is due to them not knowing the sex of the animals being received - or Marwell intends on getting more than one caracara. Eitherway one sees it, I believe that with small numbers of birds this kind of import is easier to co-ordinate than is presumably a somewhat larger group of mammals. If anything I'd imagine the dogs will arrive at this rate in June or so.

Everythink is coming along well, you should remember that most of the work is being done by Marwell staff, which sometimes means it can take a bit longer, animals are now arriving pair of Cara Cara have arrived and are off show.

A press release has been made about the bugs in Aridlands, inferring their identities as Schistocerca gregaria [desert locust] and Gryllus bimaculatus [two-spotted cricket - not a very Arid species ..] respectively. Both of which, as far as I can tell, are both pretty common feeder bugs in zoological institutions.
Hopefully the upcoming Thriving Through Nature will have more interesting bugs to its name!

The document about arrivals and births has been displayed on the notice boards just after you enter the zoo for some time. Wasn't aware it was on the website until now though.

Did you get pictures of the birds and their enclosure?
I have lots of photos of the birbs but not many of the enclosure. I can say it is wonderful though, really interesting! The only ones I have with both of them in are on my phone, so I'll see if I can add them in a bit! edit: added. Also will post more in the coming days on my insta, which is easier for me lol

It really is, so much hard work went in to get it ready and they seem to be loving it :D I spent nearly 3 hours with them yesterday and went back today for a bit and I can see the difference in even a day.. so happy they're here.

Lots of news updates on the Marwell website in the past few days.

As well as the caracara going on show they also mention that the extension to the snow leopard enclosure has been given the go ahead and there is a new colony of leaf cutter ants in the tropical house.

Apparently the plan is to extend the snow leopard enclosure to three times its current size. I presume they are going to expand into the area where the owl aviaries and takin used to be.

I wonder if the carnivore campaign will bring any more species to Marwell as well as Bush Dogs.
I recall from 2000 until 2005 there was a carnivore campaign which led to creation of Fossa, Mongoose, Ocelots, Desert Carnivore, Bat-Eared Fox and Snow Leopard exhibits - the latter of which is the only one of this campaign surviving today. It is interesting to see another similar campaign come to fruition - may some more species will arrive as well.
