Fur seals in Europe

It looks like the three male South American fur seals at Bristol Zoo will move to Woburn Safari Park. Bristol zoo has helped find another place for the Californian sea lions that Woburn currently still has. Once the sea lions leave to their new zoo, Woburn will then be able to receive Bristol's fur seals.

According to a post in a Tierpark Hagenbeck Facebook group, the albino fur seal born in 2020 in Hamburg is not a female but a male. This was allegedly discovered recently. He would now be called Elmo instead of Elsa.

At Wildlands, 20-year-old South American fur seal male Gonzo died yesterday. Tests by the vet revealed that he had health problems. To avoid severe suffering, it was decided to euthanise him.

Wildlands is going to stop holding South American fur seals. Earlier this month, the breeding male Gonzo died after which two female fur seals were left. They will eventually move to another zoo. When they will move and to which zoo is still unknown.

Just like last year, I have made a list of the current population to start the beginning of the year with. The list was made using updates done by the zoos themselves and some Holding Request I did at Species360 this year.

Not every zoo updates as much as the other, so some numbers in my list do not match the numbers on the Holding Requests. Therefore, I contacted those zoos, some of which have responded, but some of which have not yet. Therefore, the list is not completely up to date.

For the list of Northern fur seals, I have removed Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. It is difficult to get updates from zoos from these countries, so they are (perhaps temporarily) not included in the list.

As always, if you see a mistake in the list, or you know more about one of the animals, please let me know.

South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis)
Total population: 9,8,0 (17) Animals. (Within the ESB).

Besides this list, this time I have also made a short overview of what, as far as I know, happened within the European population last year.

Births
South American fur seal: To my knowledge, no South American fur seals were born last year (within the ESB/EEP population).

Cape fur seal: To my knowledge, 2 Cape fur seals were born in Europe this year. They are one male and one female.

Northern fur seal: To my knowledge, no northern fur seals were born last year.

Deaths
South American fur seal: To my knowledge, three South American fur seals died last year. The males Juan (11) and Gonzo (20) and female Iffy (25).

Cape fur seal: To my knowledge, one Cape fur seal died last year. Female Antra (14).

Northern fur seal: To my knowledge, no northern fur seals died last year.

Transfers
South American fur seal: To my knowledge, no South American fur seal moved to another zoo last year.

Cape fur seal: To my knowledge, one Cape fur seal was moved to another zoo last year.

Northern fur seal: To my knowledge, no Northern fur seal moved to another zoo last year.

Holders
South American fur seal: To my knowledge, no zoos stopped holding South American fur seals last year, nor were there any new holders in Europe. Wildlands is going to stop holding South American fur seals.

Cape fur seal: To my knowledge, no zoos stopped holding Northern fur seals last year, nor were there any new holders in Europe. The new enclosure at Zoo Rostock will open this year if all goes well, here Cape fur seals will again be kept.

Northern fur seal: To my knowledge, no zoos stopped holding Northern fur seals last year, nor were there any new holders in Europe.

At Zoo Wroclaw, 17-year-old Cape fur seal Mandisa has died. She was sick for which she had been treated from the first symptoms. With medication, her condition improved for a while, but she still would not eat. To avoid suffering, it was decided to put her to sleep.

Wildlands Emmen's spokesperson announced in a podcast that the two remaining South American fur seal females will move to Parc Zoologique de Paris.

It was reported on the German zoo forum ZooFreunde that Northern fur seal Roger died last month at Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover. Hannover now has only two females of this species.
