San Diego Zoo How to see the Striped and Spotted Hyenas?

I'll be going to San Diego Zoo June 8th and possibly June 9th. As is fairly obvious I am indeed a huge hyena enthusiast, and with them keeping 2 species behind the scenes I would absolutely love to get to see them. Is there any way I could do this? Are there any keepers I could speak with?

Like, I'm genuinely so confused? I can't find any data on this elsewhere

Not to be a killjoy, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. A lot of zoos, especially the larger ones, which tend to be more bureaucratic and structured, aren't very open to letting folks behind the scenes to visit animals if there isn't a connection there - a visiting colleague from another facility, a friend or family member, etc. San Diego has some pretty extensive behind-the-scenes spaces, and much of it is built for functionality, not for visitors - not only is it not as aesthetic, obviously (I've always promised staff I won't share pics I take when I'm back there), but it's also not as safe - there are a lot fewer barriers, and it would be much easier for someone who isn't familiar with protocol or safety to put themselves in reach of something they shouldn't.

That said. There's no harm in asking, so assuming you don't have an in with anyone there, the best thing I could suggest is to write an email (or, perhaps easier, a facebook message) pleading your case, explaining your passion for hyenas, and seeing if something can be arranged. A polite ask can't hurt. Just don't be offended or upset if they say "no" and understand they've got their reasons.

If you're confused about the hyenas appearing to be on exhibit, it's because they technically aren't. They rotate into the Lion exhibit at night and rotate off in the morning before the park opens, they're basically impossible to see.

Why are you so determined to specifically see the hyenas at San Diego? A zoo can be enjoyable to visit even when you don't see a favorite animal. Hyenas (especially spotted) are also an animal that is fairly easy to come by in US Zoos, so there's plenty of places where you'll be able to see hyenas on display. Enjoy your time at San Diego! Even without hyenas, the zoo has a huge collection that is filled with interesting animals so I'm sure you'll enjoy it regardless. It's a zoo I'd love the opportunity to visit someday.

Given your location in the US, might I suggest Denver, Saint Louis, or Sunset Zoos as places to see spotted hyenas in the future? If you're looking to travel more, the incredible Bronx Zoo also exhibits the species.

Oh no, sorry if I came across as if I wasn't excited for the rest! It's an awesome zoo, and I love it very much! It's just that it may be my only chance to see Striped Hyenas, and it'd be great to see them while I was there! I absolutely cannot wait for the trip

There are other possibilities for striped hyenas, like the ones set to come to Fort Worth Zoo. The nearest to you likely are the pair at Aikman Wildlife Adventure in central Illinois. It's an eight-hour drive from Omaha, but paired with St. Louis or Chicago, it could make a nice little road trip.

I was talking to a Wildlife Care Specialist last fall and she said there was a very old hyena that lived at the mountain lions, but in a different section. She said he was toothless and loved his caretakers.

I know this post is old, but the best way to see animals not on habitat is to call the Tour number and ask there. There is no guarantee what animals you will see. Some tours like Giraffe and friends, Early Morning Cats, and such will have various other animals part of the tour.
