Owls in North America

Was Flaco the only Eurasian Eagle Owl at the Central Park Zoo? If so, I think we can remove Central Park as a holder for that species.

Something I feel a need to say: I am increasingly finding the regular posts with social media links to be frustrating and spam on these threads than anything else. Many of the links do not take me to the actual post with the bird and I have to dig and find it to have a look.

The links I post have a picture of the bird in question so I am not sure where this is coming from. If you are referring to when I say it's on a facility's website, then I said already that it is on the website at the bottom of the post, what more do you want?

I would also like to say these threads were not originally intended to be a complete catch all - I wanted to cover the AZAs and places like Sylvan Heights, tracking places visited at least occasionally and keeping an eye on rarities. I didn't intend them as catch-alls for every tiny place with a Red-tail or Budgie.

You made the title "Owls (or any other species here) in North America". I'm glad you are setting some ground rules now but in the future, keep in mind that different people can interpret the title and list in a different way from yours.

Already the lists are very hefty to maintain and having every little place thrown at me is not helping my interest in updating these threads. Then too I probably would not mind as much if they were actual visit reports and not the result of keyboard warrioring. When and if I do update the threads again there is a high probability of small places with common species being ignored and being left off for both my interest in doing it and the relatively tiny impact such places have on the overall list.

I'll keep that in mind but I have a suggestion for you. Like I won't argue about including "small places" (though you have done it in the past, just with trip reports and not someone like me fact-checking online) but if your heart is not in the right place with the lists, have you maybe consider giving someone else the research and having them do it instead of you? Not trying to sound rude, I am just asking a question.

Most of the Facebook links are not taking me to the post in question, just to the facility's page. I then had to scroll the photos or posts til I found the right one, which in a few cases took a bit.

Zoo websites are not always reliable.

I know - and as such I also have the right to edit and exclude as I see fit.

I have had no objection to including small places in the past when they were off trip reports or particularly if there is a notable species. There is a point where a line needs to be drawn for sake of both interest and bulk.

but if your heart is not in the right place with the lists, have you maybe consider giving someone else the research and having them do it instead of you?

Two points: one, I do like doing the lists, just not when I'm getting swamped in spam that I still have to go check if I choose to include.
Two, I don't think there's anyone qualified who would be interested in taking over, nor am I necessarily interested in moving off the projects.

I think there's an issue with social media links not working for everyone for whatever reason. For example they work just fine for me, but I have also heard people have issues with them.

Not that this has really anything to do with me but I couldn't help but point out how insulting this may be. Other than the fact that it is your list, I don't think this is an appropriate judgement, given that @Smaggledagle has made a list of holders before. "Qualified" is a word that I would probably want to avoid, too, because, if I'm not somehow mistaken, most ZooChat members here are almost entirely anonymous to others. I only say this because I really don't like how unnecessarily aggressive posts to the forum can sometimes feel, not because I want to take over daunting tasks like this. This serves as a reminder to me that I and maybe the rest of the community could try a little harder at fixing this problem.

As much as I respect you for coming out to my side :p, I don't want to cause even more of a storm. Also, I do kinda get why people like @Great Argus don't want to add random facilities with the same animals over and over again, it gets tedious to add and then check up on each facility to update them for year after year.

Though I do agree with the aggressive posts. A lot of people here (me included) post passive-aggressive or full-on-aggressive comments on here. It's just a part of the ZooChat experience, but right now a lot of the hostility is unneeded.

It didn't, so why did you feel the need to wade into it and bring it up again?

He wasn't offering to take it over, he was making a suggestion?

Qualified is a very valid word I feel - the community encompasses a wide range of ages and backgrounds, and this is plenty visible without knowing everyone personally. That said, you might be surprised how many Zoochatters know each other personally and/or talk quite a bit privately both on and off site.

Also, I do kinda get why people like @Great Argus don't want to add random facilities with the same animals over and over again, it gets tedious to add and then check up on each facility to update them for year after year.

Checking up and keeping up with everything is the issue, and it's more than I've got the time to do extensively. Across my threads I monitor approximately 580 species in total - many of which are frequently held bts as ambassador animals or are common in very small places. There is a point I have to draw a line, and I've drawn it at common species in tiny places.

I only say this because I really don't like how unnecessarily aggressive posts to the forum can sometimes feel, not because I want to take over daunting tasks like this. This serves as a reminder to me that I and maybe the rest of the community could try a little harder at fixing this problem.

Ultimately there's going to be some hostility anywhere you go on the internet unfortunately, and there's no shortage of disagreement here on Zoochat either. Although too it's unnecessary to do things like responding to something you had no part in and rekindling the conversation. Equally too there's being self-aware that when you start getting a lot of pushback to consider what you're doing sooner than later. In most cases hostility is provoked, not because people are going around the forum wanting to be mean.

Of the barn owls in North American collections, are they all Tyto furcata, or are there also imported Tyto alba? If both are present, I suspect hybridization occurred before the taxonomic split.

By and large they are American Barn Owl, however there are a few European as well. No idea on hybridization.

Ochsner Park keeps Snowy Owl.

Ba Beach no longer keeps Long-eared Owl.

Any idea which facilities keep New World Barn Owls and which keep the Old World ones?

Any idea which facilities keep New World Barn Owls and which keep the Old World ones?

Far as I'm aware the majority of them hold American - World Bird Sanctuary holds European, and there are likely a few others. There are some older indications of European birds at a couple places, but I am not sure of any other European holders at present though.
Cornell has yet to separate the Barn Owls out, but I anticipate a split as the IUCN status is missing per typical pending fashion. If anyone has information re European Barn Owls being kept here please share, it would be helpful in sorting out the split for the thread.

Wish I'd gotten to posting the species list last week so you could include it in your updates: Living Coast Discovery Center (San Diego) also has Barn Owl, Long-eared Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Western Screech-owl.

There's at least one small nature center in SoCal that has Long-eared Owl also (Placerita Canyon); up to you whether to include it or not, it's a very small place but since few facilities display LEO it could be worth listing?
