Binder Park Zoo Binder Park Zoo News

A baby Addax (1.0) was born at Binder Park this year, and has been named Fitzpatrick.

2.0 African Painted Dogs arrived at the zoo this year as potential mates for their female.

The zoo also formally announced the arrival of Reticulated Giraffe Elliott from the Sedgewick County Zoo, stating that he is "already making a good impression with the ladies". All of this, and more, was discussed in a letter released on December 23rd.

RIP Norman the zebu. Binder Park Zoo on Instagram: "We are deeply saddened to announce the loss of Norman our Domestic Zebu Cattle. Today would have been his 19th birthday. Norman was born on April 5, 2004 at the Great Plains Zoo, when he arrived at Binder Park Zoo in 2005 he was paired with his companion Misty. Together they enjoyed many years together in the Forest Farm. When Misty passed in 2021 Norm was given a new lease on life and moved in with the kids down the block (the herd of goats.) They took in old man Norm like he was one of them and together they formed an unlikely bunch but somehow it worked. See, Norman was slowing down, and a little goat named Hermoine who also has some health concerns of her own weaseled her way into Norman’s heart. These two formed a special bond and would follow each other around the goat yard. The typical lifespan of a domestic zebu cattle is 12-16 years, but at 19 years, Norman was among the top 15 oldest zebu in an AZA institution. Norman was being treated by our veterinarians for arthritis over the last several years, and after a recent decline in his condition, euthanasia was the appropriate decision. Norman was the sweetest and most lovable cow. He enjoyed laying in the sun, hanging out with his goat pals, and getting treats from guests on exhibit this past summer. He was a gentle soul and brought many smiles to his keepers, staff, and guests alike. He was a big presence at this zoo, and he will be greatly missed. Rest easy old friend."

The following projects were discussed in a promotional email sent to members:

Construction of a new Red Panda habitat that will house a breeding pair.

Prairie Dogs will be returning with a new exhibit that will be twice the size of their former home.

A second entrance is being constructed for more convenient access to the SkyLark Ridge ropes course.

Binder Park has updated their map with a new style for the 2024 season. One interesting note is that the location of the former Africa Farm area teases that a new reimagined space will be coming soon. As far as I am aware there has not been any details released regarding what will go there, or when it will be completed, but it's nice to see an indication that that space will indeed be utilized again.

Thanks for posting the updated map. I like the new style and the animal icons are realistic and not cartoon images. I remember visiting Binder Park Zoo in 2010 and it's almost like there are two zoos, as one is the big African area and then literally a half-mile away is the rest of the establishment. I always expected the zoo to build a few exhibits along that walking track between Wild Africa and East Zoo, but it's never happened.

I guess maybe they just want to preserve the natural woodland?

The area between the two sections of the zoo is on a heavy incline and it would be difficult to build exhibits there.

On April 24th, it was reported that the zoo opened a new exhibit for their pygmy goats.
