Bristol Zoo Project The Wild Place news 2023

Has it been mentioned what the species will be?

Unless I've missed something rather major I don't believe so. I vaguely remember musings about the Okapi being moved there as well as the Gorillas (the latter of course being untrue), so this is rather interesting news

Does the new enclosure have stables or a house that looks more suitable for carnivores? Okapi returning would be brilliant news!

My last visit was a few months ago and if I'm remembering right there was little to suggest they'd installed anything fit for Okapi, but given how fast they build things may have changed. Hopefully we get a more useful answer from someone else :D

But the return of the Okapi would be fantastic, I know they intend to eventually but sooner rather than later hopefully

It is just the old wolf shelter, it isn’t large enough for okapi

some keepers said a few months ago that Philippine spotted deer MIGHT not for certain, go in there but I would be surprised if maybe they had if they’re getting them, the Nile lechwe in there until the eland move to another zoo

New exhibit at Wild Place Project - Philippine Spotted Deer

I visited Wild Place today and there is now signage up at the former Wolf Wood enclosure for the newest exhibit at Wild Place Project - Philippine Spotted Deer. I could only get a very brief glimpse of them in the distance whilst standing at the viewing area by the barefoot trail. They seemed to be in a shaded area near the indoor house so difficult to see and virtually impossible to photograph.

They seem to be very timid animals so a bit of patience will be needed! Hopefully given time they may settle in more and explore the whole area of their enclosure. I took a photo of the exhibit sign which I've included to this post.

Not much that hasn't been reported before.
Though interestingly, apparently the rename to Bristol Zoo Project will happen this Summer !
The construction of the Central African Forest will start in 2024.

Annoyingly it would appear they haven't put the map up on that link yet.

All looking incredibly promising though. 2024 is too far away! Will be interesting to see how much it will change, shame the big area fenced off currently is for a car park but I guess they have oodles of space. Nice it appears they are trying to keep the breathing space between exhibits

I was sad that the car park takes up a lot of space but I think in future phases they need the infrastructure

they haven’t labelled it but the walled garden looks like it’s being completely changed which was unexpected

Isn't the Walled Garden becoming the new entrance area and restaurant and discovery centre? I thought that was what they had said a while back?

Visited here the other day for the first time and I was actually very impressed, the Bear Wood is particularly excellent and rather unique.

One other thing that did struck me was the number of volunteers I saw, I must say they were all very friendly and very knowledgeable too (Which isn't always the case) almost on a level with some of the keepers, and one of the volunteers helped with the bear talk in the afternoon and answered questions etc which was really great.

Some zoos should learn from this I feel, and while its still my favourite and most frequented Zoo - the volunteers at Edinburgh (If I even see any at all) are really just for signposting which is a shame, they could be deployed a bit better like at WPP.

The arrival of the pair of Philippine spotted deer has been announced on Wild Place's website - the two animals came from Colchester and Chester Zoos. It is hoped that the pair will breed.

I must say, the photographs of them in the woodland in the article are amazing - they look a great fit in that enclosure.

does anyone know how old the eland are?

The eland have been at the park since it opened and were young animals then, not fully grown, so I imagine they're only a little older than Wild Place itself.

Had a nice sml visit here today very impressed we managed to see 2 bears playing with a ball and one in the tree saw 1 lynx and 1 wolf both asleep the areas are very impressive lots of very friendly staff and volunteers saw the 3 cheetahs wandering around whilst it doesn’t have a vast amount of animals it wa still nice ti walk around

Bristol Zoo Project

The new Bristol zoo project website is now live, I think it’s still a work in progress as in the animal part of the website, you can’t click on things such as lemurs or birds to see all the lemurs/birds they have. Also they have not got a page where you can see their conservation now which is unfortunate but overall it looks bright and fresh

It's a nice clean site, but it feels very basic lacking detail. I was a dual member before, so I know my membership has transferred to Wild Place, I do notice that the 10% discount on food, and 20% discount for friends and family visitors seems to have been done away with. It also said on membership before discounts on Experiences (10%), but these haven't returned since COVID and are not mentioned at all on the new site, so it looks as if the Zoo have done away with experiences. Despite the above changes to membership, the price of membership seems to have increased.

Visited today 26/07/23

the very hungry caterpillar trail looks great, I didn’t see all of it but the zoo has now given an indication on when some of phase 1 will finish

on the signs they have said that they will have the gorillas, mangabey, parrots, crocodiles and fish by 2025

also managed to see the spotted deer and most of the other animals
