Would be nice to see a species like that again in there as they suit it pretty well provided there's some substrate. Even meerkats could work in that environment, not that I'm suggesting that any zoo get more of those things![]()
as its not much of an experience otherwise!
Some potentially good governance news - the call for nominations for the 2023 Council Elections has opened. This year, the Society is looking specifically for candidates with experience of 'Zoo Management' (along with fund-raising, international conservation and development, and digital communication:
"We are looking for someone to join Council with experience of operating a zoo or wildlife park at the highest level, to ensure Council's continued knowledge and strategic oversight of this fundamental aspect of ZSL's conservation work."
More positive signs of a shift in attitude since the new DG's arrival.
Work was ongoing yesterday on the second wooden fence by the footpath (to keep people away from the enclosure fence) on the enclosure at the back of the otters.
Who is Khaleesi?Khaleesi seems to have settled in really nicely. The first time I saw her was the day after she arrived, and she walked off a few minutes after I sat down, even with no one else around. Today, she was sat on her mound by the glass every time I returned to her house, seemingly lapping up the attention.
Also heard that apparently they’ve been having a few eye-related health issues with the Lake Oku clawed frogs. Apparently it’s nothing serious and the frogs all seemed quite active when I was there.

I did wonder how 'wild' Water deer used to free -ranging at Whipsnade would get on, both in being caught and transported and then also placed in a smaller enclosure in London. But I see these are handraised babies- a different proposition altogether. But being females they won't be 'vampires'.There's also an article on the ZSL Whipsnade website about the Chinese water deer - one thing to note is that the four animals moving to London are all female.
