Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2023

Only a bit of news to share today, I visited Twycross today and a few new things.

The enclosure which used to house the L’hoest monkeys and most recently Pygmy Marmosets near the Black Rhinos and the Owls is being upgraded. The Pygmy’s Marmosets have now moved with the Red Titis near the Bonobos and Zebras.

The old otter enclosure has now been bordered up, hopefully we can see something else be put there like a new family of Otters or something else.

The birds near the Lorikeets and Orangutans are back out. Species including Silvery-Cheeked Hornbill, Red Fronted Macaws, Vasa Parrot and Yellow-Shouldered Amazon.

Inside the aviary in The Gruffalo (the one before you go you into the Owls not the walkthrough which used to house finches) is home to Hamerkops and an Edward’s Pheasant.

The flamingo chick is growing up fast and it’s looks very well.

The 60th anniversary celebrations are wonderful and the exhibit on the History of the zoo inside the Rhino School House (used to be the Elephant School House) near the giraffes is extremely fascinating and to see some of the old props used is awesome. Unfortunately I couldn’t take photos of it because it’s prohibited.

The L’hoest monkeys troop have been split up, there are now two troops one in the old Bonobo house with the Giant Tortoise and one opposite next to the Tigers.

Any ideas on the what the next stage of the Masterplan is? I assume it will be the Conservation Centre / Orang habitat. Have any planning permissions gone in?

It’s expected to be that yes, and was originally set to open in 2024. No planning application yet, which could put a question mark over that date. But there has been a tender process for contractors which should have drawn to a close back in April I think, and then because this is Gov/local authority funded, it will probably get fast tracked through planning too.

Does it even need planning given it was government funded ? Would have thought that would have been looked at in the funding stage, would be a bit of egg on there face if they approved the funding only for local planning to reject the proposal

My local authority are looking to build a new head quarters and that’s currently going through planning… so I’d say yes, it probably will still need planning permission.

But they will have done their due diligence at the review/bid stage and it’s likely just a formality.

It's such a shame the Gorilla's new enclosure has been pushed back as well. Hopefully, it won't be too long until they get at least the revamped outside that has been planned for the last few months.

The new CEO, Craig Dunkerley, who has been in the job for four weeks is making promising changes to the membership. With things like 25% of experiences etc but also allowing members to enter the zoo earlier than normal guests and having member events. And something I’m really exited for is monthly e-newsletters with exclusive behind the scenes content. I’m excited to see what Craig Dunkerley is planning for Twycross.

I love the idea of members getting early access. E-newsletter might be good as well, if it tells us a bit more about what is planned for the future.

Twycross has now got a new website what is a lot more easier to navigate. Before when you’d click on a button It wouldn’t load anything. I can already see Twycross improving!
