Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2023

Please do! Nobody has admitted knowing where Kayan is although Monkeyworld is a good possibility.
I’ve recently received the magazine from Monkey World which was written before Silvestre left. It says “We are planning for the imminent graduation of Silvestre and there is already a new arrival waiting in the wings” No more information.

Does anyone happen to know the names of any of the siamang, pileated and agile gibbons?

I was surprised when I saw Kayan, I thought she'd have been gone by now, if I get the chance next time I'm there, I will ask.

How odd about Kayan. I was going to ask whether anyone knew where she had moved to! Also, are there any links to the gorilla or conservation / orang planning applications?

They’ve started to renovate the Dusky Langur house. I’ve posted a picture of the current work on the house in media. The small monkey area (tamarins, marmosets ect) is still closed off.

Been at Twycross this morning, heavily depressing the zoo is becoming.
Most exhibits you can’t see through the glass due to condensation.

No access to the Longhouse, Flamingos and Pelicans offshow (understandable), Bonobos fenced off and can’t view exhibit, loads and loads of empty enclosures. Lemur walkthrough closed, several primate exhibits under renovation and unable to see the animals.

Glad it’s only cost £15 instead of the normal £26, I would not pay £26 to visit Twycross in its current state.

Unless you want to see Meerkats, Penguins and a couple of Giraffe that is.

It feels totally depressing here right now, more
empty than full exhibits and ones that have animals in, because of the condensation on both sides of the glass you can’t see them!

Do you know how long the reduced pricing has been in place? Their website doesn't mention this at all- perhaps because they don't want to admit the reason.... these are common complaints about Twycross these days- condensation on viewing windows, closed-off houses, empty exhibits, 'no entry' areas and ugly fences.

The booking calendar has the prices and apart from weekends and the school break, will be £15 for adults until April. I think it started back in December, when they had limited £10 tickets too.
The condensation has always been a problem there in the colder months and puts me off going even just for the afternoons, but it does sound really bad now with all the work going on.

What’s annoying is there is never any Information or explanation just a lot of mess you go to other zoos ie Dudley, Chester and there’s plenty of info on what they are doing etc plenty of building and renovations but it’s not a mess

Worse thing is, I only went as wanted to photo the Bonobo and Michie’s Tufted Deer!
No mention on website the Bonobo are currently offshow , well you can stand 25ft from a window and see one if you’re lucky but no good for photos and with crates in the deer exhibit, I fear the only ones in the UK might be no longer about soon!

While I don't have any knowledge about possible movements either way, the crates are not necessarily anything to worry about as they seem to have been there more or less continuously for about the last two years at least I think!

Ther's nothing like being thorough with crate training Maguari.:)

Managed to speak to a keeper.

The Bonobo area if fenced off, with only house viewing because, they are sorting out the path. I wondered with the poles in the ground, if an extension was being done, but no, it is just work on the path and viewing should be back to normal in the next couple of weeks.

Michie's Tufted Deer are 2 females, but not going anywhere, they are just doing crate training in case they ever need to take them in for veterinary needs and she said they do this with a lot of animals.

The small monkeys area is now open with the Marmosets and Tamarin's back on show. This is what the keeper told me, but sadly I couldn't find this area, and the only ones I saw were the Titi Monkeys and Pygmy Marmosets, and the ones behind here, appeared to be fenced off.

A lot of birds have been moved or are offshow because of AI.

Over this year, they are doing a lot of improvements on many of the primate exhibits, so things will shuffle around this year as each improvement is done. She said a lot of the primates were in multiple exhibits or in ones they wouldn't normally be in at present.

I asked if the Lemur Walkthrough would re-open soon, and was told unlikely in the near future.

Went to Twycross today for the first time in years. Didn’t really make an effort to go for a long time as I found it quite depressing. Can’t say my feelings have changed much after today! Felt particularly sad about the orangs… Kayan was nowhere to be seen so assume she’s moved now? The other youngster was mating with its mother for most of the 5 hours I was there. Not seen this behaviour in another collection before… not blaming the zoo as such as animals do things like this. Just felt if they had more to do, or a better enclosure, boredom wouldn’t cause this kind of behaviour to happen.
Loved seeing the gorillas and Bonobo. However the bonobo enclosure was closed off on the outside so couldn’t see them active.

Lots of enclosures empty and many steamy windows! Hopefully it means they are making some improvements? Or making plans for more enclosures refurbs? Hope so!

I think they still have quite a lot going on behind the scenes ( i.e. the conservation centre and new orang enclosure plans) but I agree with the above; it would make all the difference if they explained what was happening
