Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2023

What did they do with the old snow leopard enclosure?

Unfortunately, I still haven't heard anything. So I guess, for now they just modernized and prepared it for new animals. But I'm quite sure it can't take very long now, until we find out.

According to another zooforum user, they still had 4 Pikas by the end of 2022. I didn't really find/ look it up in the report for myself, but this user is very reliable. But I guess it doesn't make much of a difference for visitors, as they aren't on display (I heard you can peek through a bit at times, but so far I didn't manage to see any of them).
The Berlin Tierpark is the only ZTL collection with pikas. I wonder why they are off-show. I remember the Kiwi Haus at Stuttgart Zoo had CCTV so visitors could see the kiwi in its indoor enclosure. Couldn't CCTV be used for the pikas?

Whereabouts would you peek through? I'm visiting next month and would love to see one, even if not very well.

Somewhere in the most remote parts of the Himalaya area. Keep an open eye for structures behind the scenes. But don't expect too much. You may well go without seeing one at all like I did (the same is true for the flying squirrels by the way - even though I know their exhibit well enough I never saw more than a head). I think there is plenty to see so I wouldn't bother too much. Especially, since most users on here come a long way and have limited time...

For the first time ever the Wattled Cranes have got a chick!

I just checked Zootierliste. Apparently, among the 16 listed zoos currently keeping wattled cranes, only 5 others ever bred them: Dunstable (UK), Walsrode (Germany), Labenne and Villars les Dombes (both France, the latter in the late 7oies) and Zlin (Czech Republic). Seems to be a rather delicate species.

That's helpful, thank you! I'll walk slowly round Himalayas and keep an eye out.

Well, apparently they just put an egg of the black-necked cranes in there. At least this is what a rather well informed source writes. But a lot of German zoo forum users got fooled - just like I got fooled as well. Not to mention the wattled cranes themselves. ;)

I´m not expecting to see them, so a peeking head would be a massive success for me :D

I actually was quite thrilled as well, when it finally happened at the third try or so. For what I actually saw, it could have been a guinea pig or anything really, but I still knew I'd seen the first flying squirrel in my life.

But at the same time, I kind of think we all must be completely nuts spending precious life time waiting in front of a wood log hoping for a furry face to show for a few seconds. And sometimes I almost get a sense like these little buggars actually know it too and exploit this quite a lot to their entertainment. Pardon my French, but these furry little fellows really can be annoying (sometimes they even move back and forth so you know they are there and close to the hole but actually you see virtually nothing). :D

Exactly 68 years ago, the Tierpark opened it gates for the very first time. In all these years, it went through a lot of external change but it only ever saw three administrations - two of which led the park for decades and never moved on to any other zoo after that (in fact both of them died relatively shortly after). And the years of the current director also reach double digits next year. I take this as a token that once you get to know this park properly, it's rather hard to let go of it. And in fact, among the many of my cherished locations in Berlin it still remains my favourite one.

I visited Tierpark today, I had a great time but there were some species I wanted to see that I could not find. I saw the enclosure for the red and white flying squirrels but I could not see the animals.

I wanted to see the species in this list but I couldn't find them:
Harpy Eagle
Echidna
Honey Badger/Ratel
Golden Cat
Steppe Marmot
Bat eared fox
White bearded masked palm civet
Tamandua

Can anyone tell me where they are located? Please :)

Can someone tell me where they are located please? I want to go back and see them :)

Harpy Eagle
In the section with other raptors - a section which I admittedly missed. Found in the rough middle section of the zoo
Echidna
AFAIK not currently on-show.
Golden Cat
I believe in the Alftred-Brehm House.
Honey Badger/Ratel
In a caged area outside the Alfred-Brehm.
Steppe Marmot
These might be off-show as well.
White bearded masked palm civet
Same as honey badger if I'm correct.
As for the last two [the tamandua and fox] I am not entirely sure, so it'd be appreciated if another member assisted myself in these whereabouts, and also authenticating the ones I have already posted.
