Greensboro Science Center Greensboro Science Center: News & Expansion Updates

Later this week the Astronaut Training Space Launch Simulator will open up in the lower level of the center! I can't wait to see what this is all about and it will probably be a great addition to the facility!

Other June 2023 News:

On June 9th, the zoo announced that they acquired several moth species, including Cecropia moths, which are now on exhibit in the Cole Family Monarch Conservation Center & Butterfly House.

On June 14th, the zoo announced that (1.1) red pandas were born on May 26th. The zoo also announced that the pandas will make their exhibit debut on June 15th in the Shearer Animal Hospital.

The Greensboro Science Center has announced the Herpetarium will be closing this week. It will then be converted to an animal ambassador space. This will allow the animals in the current ambassador building to move in and thus allow construction of the rainforest biodome. The post states that a reptile and amphibian exhibit will be incorporated into the biodome.

Oh wow, I am actually thinking about visiting this weekend, so this may be my last chance to see that space. This is exciting news!

Now, when you say "ambassador building", are you referring to the Discovery House?

The post states that a reptile and amphibian exhibit will be incorporated into the biodome.
Seeing as the Biodome is a rainforest, I'm assuming that more species will be acquired, as there are only a few tropical herps on the lower level (Prehensile-tailed Skink, Dart frogs, and tree boa). I would love to see Eyelash Vipers, Leaf Insects, Green Basilisk, and a Tree Monitor (any species)!!
Yes that I what I meant as that building will be removed.
As is the Crocodile exhibit. The Tortoises will also be moved to a new indoor/outdoor exhibit for the dome.

Since the Herpetarium closed, I thought I should get around to posting my photos of it from a few months ago :D There might be a few aquarium tanks missing but other than that, I think there's photos of every exhibit at GSO. As for the herpetarium, it may be looked really old, but I was impressed with the size of space for most of the species.

So I just came back from a visit to the Greensboro Science Center, partially to see the Herpetarium one more time before it finally closes. Some observations.
  • The Herpetarium was still open (it is closing Weds), but some of the animals have already been moved out, including the Sinaloan Milksnake, Naked Mole-rats, Henkel's Leaf-tailed Gecko, and Chilean Rosehair Tarantula. The exhibit lights were off, and their exhibits were cleared of all plants and furishings. Anything I didn't mention from that wing was still on exhibit.
  • In the aquatic wing, the left half of the room, to the left of the former Tentacled Snake exhibit where the open-air Diamondback Terrapin/Mummichog exhibit was, has been completely walled off, with an actual wall installed, so it just flat-out doesn't exist anymore. The Diamondback Terrapin that lived there has been moved to the Rhinoceros Iguana exhibit in the aquarium, where it is now signed. The Mummichog has not been re-exhibited.
  • The Tentacled Snake exhibit itself has been removed and completely gutted. The other 3 turtle exhibits in that wing (Alligator Snapping Turtle, Spotted Turtle, and the 2nd Diamondback Terrapin exhibit), were still present and in use.
  • Speaking of which, the Alligator Snapping Turtle exhibit also had an unspecified species of Sunfish (Centrarchidae) and what appeared to be Nila Tilapia (which have also been recently added to the Pygmy Hippo exhibit along with Lake Victoria Cichlids).
  • The Discovery House was fully operational. No changes there.
  • Got to see both Huckleberry the Pygmy Hippo calf as well as the 2 Red Pandas cubs.
  • Saw the Red Panda adults exploring their habitat later in the day despite the absolutely oppressive heat index. Maybe Red Pandas are more hardy than I thought?
  • There is a new "Sensory Trail", which is a short unpaved trail that goes down near the creek, and is located along the path between the Red Panda and Maned Wolf exhibits.
  • Just discovered that the barn at Jeansboro Junction is home to a Barn Owl!
  • The Caribbean Flamingos were back on exhibit.

- The Aldabra Tortoises have temporarily moved into the outdoor Komodo Dragon exhibit.
- The Emerald Tree Boa and the Dart Frogs have moved to spot where the Tentacled Snakes were. This seems to be very temporary as there isn't even signage for these animals.
