I hiked around Moss Rock Preserve the other day and while plenty of birds were around in the right places, most of them were not new for this year. Moss Rock is a bit off the beaten trail and at around sunset there was next to no one there - the power line easement is apparently a good place to spot groundhog, but as that was the only place with dog-walkers, there were none to be seen.

For what it's worth, I did manage to find a few species I haven't recorded yet this year, and one lifer bird - a Hooded Warbler. I also heard Wood Thrushes singing and repeatedly tried to call one into the open, but no luck.

Mammals:
16. Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) - 6/28/23
17. White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) - 6/28/23

Birds:
98. Hooded Warbler (Setophaga citrina) - 6/28/23

Invertebrates:
24. Common Eastern Bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) - 6/28/23

Some catching up to do:

193 Common Yellowthroat Geothlypis trichas
194 Wilson's Warbler Cardellina pusilla
196 Summer Tanager Piranga rubra
197 Alder Flycatcher Empidonax alnorum
198 Bell's Vireo Vireo bellii
199 Northern Bobwhite Colinus virginianus
200 Snowy Egret Egretta thula
201 Blue Grosbeak Passerina caerulea
202 Wild Turkey Meleagris gallopavo
203 Black Vulture Coragyps atratus
204 Green Heron Butorides virescens
Not sure what happened with your numbering here, but you jumped from 183 in your last post straight to 193 in this post, so I don't know what your current total actually is.

Herps
10. Green Frog Lithobates clamitans
You should be on 11 herptiles. I had you down for 4 reptiles and 6 amphibians already, so the Green Frog should be your 7th amphibian making 11 total.

Herps
8. Common Snapping Turtle Chelydra serpentina
9. Mink Frog Lithobates septentrionalis
Herps
10. Northern Leopard Frog Lithobates pipiens

Mammals
19. Least Chipmunk
Neotamias minimus

Reptiles
34. Black Spiny-tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura similis)
36. Tiger Rat Snake (Spilotes pullatus)
You jumped a number here, meaning all your following reptile posts were one up. Your last post has you at 39 reptiles, so I've put you one down at 38.

A walk at Devil Bend Reservoir today. The reservoir has been retired from it's roll providing water, and is now a public park. Deep reservoirs are not great for waterbirds and the surrounding bush was mostly weed plants, so I don't think I will bother coming back soon.

While I’d be the last to complain about the diversity of nightjars we get here, I am jealous of the fact you’re able to identify the at all. I saw three nightjars in one night last week, but who knows which nightjar they were. I must say would be much simpler if we had just one resident species.
———
Considering I sent the last week busy with classes, chores and other work I expected it to be a week like any other, but it was anything but. I’m particularly proud of the owl, as I managed to track it down whil doing chores in school due to the sounds of birds mobbing it. Personally I’ve found this to be the most reliable way of finding owls. The sirkeer is also another species I have dreamed about seeing for years. They are honestly more mammalian than avian, scurrying about on boulders like squirrels or mongooses.
Birds
151. Sirkeer Taccocua leschenaultii
152. Brown Hawk-owl Ninox scutulata

Snakes are also always a surprise. I’m terrible at finding them, so it is no surprise these two were found by others. I’m not sure whether I can count the trinket snake - someone had captured it for relocation.
Reptiles
- Trinket Snake Coelognathus helena
X. Yellow-green Cat-snake Boiga flaviviridis

Also, a few leftovers from earlier weeks. I’ve probably seen the flycatcher before in winter when it migrates to a wider area, but with so many other migratory flycatchers around then it is hard to conclusively identify.
Birds
153. Asian Brown Flycatcher Muscicapa dauurica

154. White-throated Kingfisher Halcyon smyrnensis
I haven’t been able to keep up with other people’s posts in this thread due to school work, but I am lucky that at least I have some time for wildlife watching.
More snakes: it’s nice having a herpetologist around. I honestly don’t know how they (or anyone else) even spot the wretched serpents.
Reptiles
- Green Keelback Rhabdophis plumbicolor
(bagged so doesn’t count)
8. Bamboo Pit Viper Craspedocephalus gramineus (free and bagged)

For birds, the breeding season is in full swing. Crows and kites are scrounging around for twigs, barbets and parakeets inspecting nests hollows, bulbuls consorting in reticent pairs and every type of cuckoo is becoming manic at the prospects of their host’s households (even the non-parasitic coucal). A set of Puff-throated Babblers had already hatched a brood in one of their ground nests, but unfortunately mysteriously disappeared. The Baya Weavers are finishing up their lovely bottle shaped pendulous nests with grass and strips of palm leaves, and many of their females seem to be joining in already. I suspect the pair of the following species I saw in an ornamental are also having breeding on their mind - they often build in the eaves of buildings. I haven’t found where their nest may be though.
Birds
160. Scaly-breasted Munia Lonchura punctulata

You should be on 159 now?
Corrected.

Last Italian bird for me. Literally saw it on the drive to the airport.

Birds
