The latest communication from Blijdorp to the public is that there are different options being explored.
It's going to be a hard decision, because usually male gorillas do not tolerate offspring that is not their own, and when a new male joins an existing group, its a hazard to the younger members to the group.

However, just keeping the females on their own for a long time might bring trouble as well. The adult females in the group, Aya and Tamani, might have a conflict over their position in the group. The latest news however is that the group dynamics are still fine. :)

Apenheul is the EEP coördinator on gorilla's so they are the ones having to put some puzzle pieces together about the future of Blijdorp's gorilla group. Perhaps a new male will join the females, perhaps one or both of the females and their offspring will move as well. But it's mainly speculation for us zoo-enthousiasts at this point. ;)

The Rüppel's griffon vulture that escaped Blijdorp zoo recently was found by a falconer a few weeks ago... In East Germany!

Leipzig is the closest zoo, but they do not have room for vultures. So the animal has been picked up by Zoo Berlin. She is currently being held behind the scenes and will be introduced into their vulture aviary in the future. There are also plans for Berlin to receive a male Rüppel's vulture so that Berlin can join in on the breeding program

Mild self-correction: The Vulture was picked up by Tierpark Berlin, not Zoo Berlin
 
New youngsters in Diergaarde Blijdorp!

- In may a Pudu deer was born. It turns out the youngster is a female.

- Ringtailed lemures 'Kira' and 'Ketaka' both had twins! :)
 
Diergaarde Blijdorp ontvangt 18 miljoen euro voor restauratie Rivièrahal: ‘Een nieuwe hotspot’ - OPEN Rotterdam

The municipality of Rotterdam will donate 18 million euros to renovate the famous rivierahal in Diergaarde Blijdorp. Not a lot of detail yet, but so far it seems like the parts that will be renovated are at least the Victoria-serre, the gorilla enclosure and the pachyderm wing. A square with terrace will be added in front of the hall that should also be open outside zoo opening hours.
 
At Diergaarde Blijdorp, 4-year-old Asiatic lioness Mette has died. From an early age, she had been struggling with neurological problems. This could be seen, for example, in her abnormal walking, which caused her to stumble a lot. These problems increased, after which the zoo decided to put her to sleep. Her sisters Asha and Reena have the same neurological problems but currently to a lesser extent than Mette.

Besides Mette's death, there is also good news. Diergaarde Blijdorp will soon introduce a new Asiatic lion male to female Lalana. She is the mother of Mette and her sisters. Lalana herself has no neurological problems.

-The bird flue is finally getting less serious in the Netherlands. As such, all aviaries are accessible again, with exception of Burung Asia. This has to due with maintenance issues, the aviary probably won't be opened again before it's demolished in 2024 or 2025.
-Speaking of Burung Asia: birth of one Asian woolly-necked stork!
-Birth of 4 Darwin's rheas, they're being raised by their dad
-Lovers of rare species take note: three Balabac chevrotain have transferred to the Nature Conservation Center in the Oceanium. Frankly I'm not 100% sure if there are still any in Rumah Asia.
-The Vietnam pheasants have transferred to the Van-Harencarspel aviary in the Victoria Serre (that cage that also houses the crowned pigeons)
-A rare instance of flowering with one Amorphophallus titanum, or as the Dutch call 'em, a penis plant.
-The renovation of the animal clinic has been finished

Isn't Burung Asia the only remaining walkthrough aviary? With Vulture rock being closed off and the Pantanal aviaries being reconstructed?
 
The asian swamp aviary is also closed. It will be closed until its demolished. There are no chevrotains in the asia house anymore. I hope that the eventual offspring will be housed in this enclosure. It feels a bit empty without them.
 
Blijdorp received six arctic foxes from a Ukraine zoo. Four of them will stay in the zoo. They also received four lion-tailed macaques. All four are female. They are forming a new group with the male. He was alone for some time.
There is a plan to open the monumental presquare for free. There were some enclosures here, they have been demolished between 2008 and the begin 2010's. They are going to test this during the openmonument weekend. During these weekends you can book a free tour. This tour is all about the monuments that are in blijdorp. Blijdorp is going to do a test run to see if they can open this square up for the public. They have alot of different food trucs on the square and there will be live music. This will happen during the second and third weekend of september between six an ten pm.
During the summer the "sporendriehoek" will be used to temporary house the forest reindeers and the swamp wallabies. The monumental stable that they're housed in will get renovated. This project will be finished in the beginning of 2024.
