Does anyone know what will happen with the gorilla's now that bokito has passed?
The latest communication from Blijdorp to the public is that there are different options being explored.
It's going to be a hard decision, because usually male gorillas do not tolerate offspring that is not their own, and when a new male joins an existing group, its a hazard to the younger members to the group.
However, just keeping the females on their own for a long time might bring trouble as well. The adult females in the group, Aya and Tamani, might have a conflict over their position in the group. The latest news however is that the group dynamics are still fine.
Apenheul is the EEP coördinator on gorilla's so they are the ones having to put some puzzle pieces together about the future of Blijdorp's gorilla group. Perhaps a new male will join the females, perhaps one or both of the females and their offspring will move as well. But it's mainly speculation for us zoo-enthousiasts at this point.
