Ouwehands Zoo Ouwehands Dierenpark, Rhenen

What happens to the Roloways monkeys that live with the gorilla’s? And a bit of an odd choice, because apenheul just opened an exhibit for the exact same species.

But they are a relative rare species and i guess the program was in need of space for excess males? And you can’t have too much of a good thing :)

The Roloways haven't been in with the gorillas for a long while. These were already in an enclosure near the pelicans during my last visit a few years ago. Unless they were in the gorilla enclosure in the time I haven't been, the gorillas have been alone since at least 2021

Already since late 2020/early 2021, the Roloway monkeys have been living in their own enclosure. The combination with the gorillas no longer went well.
 
 
 
Visited Ouwehands yesterday and not too much to report. The new koala enclosure is under construction to a point that the foundations seem to have been laid. There is also a new tall square building with 2 adjacent square cages being build next to the clouded leopards without any signage. One of the cages is being outfitted with ropes, so either monkeys or at least a climbing mammal (perhaps the Roloways?) seem the most obvious.

Ouwehands to me always manages to underwhelm with a distinct sense of dilapidation, mostly coming from the brutalistic use of concrete. The new Bonobo exhibit is in style. It’s not bad at all, but with a huge concrete backdrop and artificial climbing structures this exhibit can only have been created by Ouwehands chief designer. Whoever created the beautifull hornbill aviaries at the entrance was quickly gagged and stuffed away to a point these now stick out like a healthy thumb on an otherwise sore body.

I was also a bit shocked at the poor maintenance overall. The aquarium is essentially falling apart, the playground at the African village had a sign saying that is was closed by the health and safety inspection and at the Panda enclosure, parts of the Chinese building seem to be rotting away.

Anyways, kids loved the playground so who am I to complain?

there will be yellow throated martins
 
Is Short-Tailed Spotted Cuscus at Rhenen still alive, and where and how it can be best seen?
