ZSL London Zoo London Zoo News 2023

I know it’s not entirely relevant but i thought some enthusiasts may like to hear.
Of the three asiatic lioness born at ZSL and recently relocated to Sherwin zoo, Heidi has just had two cubs.

Brilliant news about Heidi becoming a Mum, here is a photo of the 2 cubs

I spent this morning in the ZSL Library.

My intention was, after leaving the library, to have a very thorough look round the old Reptile House for (possibly) the last time.

Disappointingly I discovered that this building was closed today for "essential maintenance". Should anyone else be planning a visit to Regent's Park, specifically for a final look at the old Reptile House, best check the building is open before making a long journey

Hopefully the “old” reptile house will reopen. I was at zoo last Friday and a ceiling tile had fallen on to the floor

Excellent news, though this does further call into question Bhanu’s capabilities even more so since the girls were transferred. All I ever hear of him is yet another trip to the vets for yet another ailment!

My thoughts exactly, lions aren’t even long in gestation once pregnant and I’ve seen them mating a few visits in early 2023 and summer 2022 so I do wonder myself,

Indeed I certainly hope the old Reptile House will reopen; it would be very sad to lose both that building and the Aquarium within a relatively short time period.

However, the ZSL obviously needs to be pragmatic. With the new Reptile House nearing completion, can the expense of repairing the old building be justified?

Fully accept that ZSL needs to be pragmatic but from what I saw on Friday it was just one tile. I would expect Maintenance team to fix that problem

Obviously the damage needs to assessed before decisions can be made, but wasn't the original plan to use the old Reptile House for a zoo history display which wouldn't require much energy for heating, lighting etc?

Like you I heard that there was an idea for a museum or zoo history but no one seems to know if this is actually going to happen. It’s seems rather vague at the moment

I hope you're right and trust the damage is not more extensive; hopefully it can be repaired soon.

There are a lot of ideas floating around about the use for the old reptile house. One is a ZSL museum/history of as you said. ZSL has so many really interesting items hidden away in storage which could make a great exhibit. Another idea is to take there Vets in Action half-term event they have run for a number of years now (kids dress up as vets and do pretend exams on soft toys), expand it and make it permanent. Similar to the whole Little City/KidZania role play events you see around the country now days just Zoo focused. Dress up as a vet, keeper, role play etc

But the Zoo will be very aware of the perception of entering and the first thing you see is two closed buildings. Not a good look when a average family may have just spent the best part of £100 on entering.

In other news, 3x warthogs have arrived, either 3 female or 2 female and 1 male. Should be on show this weekend.

Warthogs news, I was told a few weeks ago that the zoo was getting just 2 warthogs, brothers. Obviously those plans have changed

Net up around the water deer enclosure, presumably to help them acclimatise when they move. Not long left then, hopefully.

Warthogs out in the outdoor enclosure, but very shy. Only caught a brief glimpse of one, tucked away in the shady corner by the bridge.

Hopefully, might see warthogs next week, they might be more settled. It will be good to have the water deer in that paddock, which has been empty for ages. At zoo last night, reptile house still closed for maintenance work

The old reptile house will be reopening shortly once the part of the suspended ceiling is fixed and will now remain open for the summer (to make up for the new one not ready yet), but some areas will be closed off. Better than nothing!

What enclosure are the water deer in?

does anybody know if anything is now occupying the Malayan tapir enclosure?
