Aquamarine Fukushima Aquamarine Fukushima News

There's a superb, 6-page article about Aquamarine Fukushima in the Spring 2023 issue of Zoo Grapevine & International Zoo News. The species list is a zoo nerd's dream. Going through the article, there are rarities mentioned such as Japanese Marten, Japanese Grass Vole, Iwaki Salamander (only just described in 2022), Sagami Hagfish, Broadnose Sevengill Shark, Indo-Pacific Sailfish (now deceased), Magochi Flathead, Loughlin's Northern Sea-lion and Ribbon Seal (the solitary specimen in captivity).

There are then two incredible rooms filled with deep sea creatures, including "a big wall with about 30 to 40 small tanks". There are several different types of Blobfish, an Okhotsk Sculpin, Hokkaido Sea Angel, around a dozen species of deep-sea shrimps and prawns, Pacific Saury, Moonfish and Slender Pigfish. There's another 20 smaller tanks in a separate room with species such as Eremo Skate, Large-headed Sculpin and many other delights. Near the end of the extensive review, the statement "you will leave with the mental image of at least 60 to 100 new species that you have never seen before" makes one want to immediately book a plane ticket to this aquarium!

Undoubtedly, a visit to this aquarium should be engraved in golden letters as an essential part of any zoonerd's trip to Japan. The facilities, with few exceptions, are fantastic and the zoological collection incredible.

As an important fact, we could'nt see the striped seal: in the hot months it is not in public view and we did not know this. So plan your visit well if you want to see it.
