14-year old Solstice, a female generic giraffe, has been transferred from the Great Plains Zoo for a breeding recommendation and 2-year old Kioni, a male born at OKC Zoo in 2021, was also transferred to another undisclosed facility.

“Babies: red panda, giraffe, clouded leopard, and possibly an elephant and a painted dog are pregnant. The bird team had two flamingo chicks’ hatch.”

Nope. Someone asks on every single social media post they make, whether it’s Africa related or not. They just keep saying “later this summer.” It’s very frustrating.

Red Panda Birth

We are bursting with excitement to announce the arrival of a healthy male red panda cub! The cub was born on Thursday, July 20, at the Zoo’s red panda habitat in Sanctuary Asia to first-time mom, Khyana, 4, and father, Benjamin, 8.

The OKC Zoo's expert veterinary care team performed a neo-natal exam on our newest family member and say that the little guy is healthy and growing as he should! Caretakers also report that first-time mother Khyana is demonstrating appropriate maternal behaviors such as a grooming and nursing her offspring and all are in good health. At birth, Khyana's little cub weighed 131 grams or only about 1/4 pound!

Khyana and her cub are spending time bonding behind-the-scenes and will not on public view. Stay tuned on social media for more updates on the newest member to the OKC Zoo animal family!

A keeper I spoke to, during my visit yesterday says that the reason Expedition Africa is still not open is not even known to them, he said they are aiming for fall now. He thinks that some animals are taking longer to adapt to their new exhibits and some last minute changes are to blame. Some of the exhibits like the honey badger and lemurs you can walk right up to, the lemurs were even out for a few minutes. I don't know if this is recent but the pair of Raccoon Dogs that were in Sanctuary Asia with the Francois Langur now live in Cat Forest.

On July 29th, the zoo announced that (0.0.2) Palawan peacock pheasants hatched which are now on exhibit.

The vast majority of clouded leopard cubs in AZA are hand reared per SSP protocol, so I don’t find it particularly surprising

If it needed to be hand-reared for whatever reason, Nashville would be the best place to send it, so it's not surprising to me.
